30 minute project
Start by usig a torx bit to remove the 6 plastic torx retainers holding the platic cowl to the front of the firewall.
Then remove the rubber hood seal from along the front edge of the cowl where it meets the firewall.

Lift up the passenger side of the cowl and remove the existing cover by just popping it out. Vacuum out any junk behind the existing grill.

Place the grill over the filter, I added some tape to hold mine on better, the tabs are worthless on it. Replace the cowl and rubber molding and start breathing clean air.
Started to rain no finished pictures sorry.

All Grand Cherokee WJ series models (1999-2004) and the new WK series (2005-up) feature a housing for installation of a cabin air filter. No models have ever come with the filter as standard, it must be purchased as a Mopar aftermarket accessory and installed under the front cowl.
There is no housing inside teh cowl for teh filter you have to buy the kit the first time. If you do not believe me then pop your cowl off and look, it will be a flat grate over two rectangular holes. THere are two small holes between the two rectangular ones that hold the housing on.
