I just experienced a similar problem. I've seen the crank sensor brought up numerous times, but usually the symptoms seem to be that the engine shuts off and then doesn't start back up for a few minutes--mine shut off on the way home but it started back up immediately the first try. Could it be something else?

I ordered the part but if this doesn't work I'm gonna have a bone to pick.

When it shuts off, does it start RIGHT back up or does it not want to start for a while? If it starts right up, there might be something else. Otherwise, I agree with the crank sensor. My ZJ was doing the shut off while driving last year, and sometimes not starting for a bit. Changed the CPS and its been just fine since.

Its only happened twice so far, but it did start right back up after I put it in park and shut it down each time. All my electronics onboard were still on so its not the batt. or alt.

Okay so I got the part and I found the old one on the bellhouse... but how the hell am I supposed to get that out of there? There is next to no room to ratchet the two bolts fastening the CKS. Is lowering the tranny the only option??

My vote is crank sensor. My ZJ has the same problem. I got mine off ebay for 16$ instead of paying $$ on other auto part sites.

About the bone. This is an opinion forum. We do not gaurentee results. We are giving our opinions as to what it could be. Don't hold us responsible if it doesn't!

There is a write-up somewhere about an access panel in the floor to get to the CPS on the V8s. Seems to me it's under the carpet and under the glove box.

I wouldn't actually kick up any dust if it doesn't work out--I'm not the type to flame on a message board.

I just got a ratchet extension kit with some u-joints and I'm pretty confident I can get the job done with it, as soon as it stops pouring freezing rain out (3 days straight).

Welp. The extensions got me halfway there at least. However a new surprise came with the removal of the first bolt: some plastic doodad came off with the sensor and I want to make sure it goes back properly (because of the awkward angle I have to work from I didn't exactly get a good look at the piece before it popped off and landed in my hand)... I took special care that the 2nd bolt didn't fall into the bellhouse! I hope I'm as lucky on the second round.

So, it goes back like this, correct?

IDK. I was going to say something, but I don't remember. I was interupted and then had a senior moment.
