Default Timing Chain issue

Here is a question for the 4.0 buffs, If a cam is off 180 degrees will that make the motor run hot? It was hard starting before, had to grind awhile before it fired up. Now should I reset the cam and dist before I put the new chain and gears on? Looks like the PO put it together 180 off timing. It ran OK other the running hot and hard starting.

According to the manul, the cam pin should be around the 2 o-clock possition, mine is at the eight o-clock position. Sounds crazy but this thing ran

Chilton! When I opened the engine up and tred to line up the marks they where way off. Crank mark was where it was supposed to be but the cam was 180 degrees off (11 o-clock pos).

This is from a 95 xj factory service manual. It says to turn the crankshaft until the sprocket timing mark is at the position in the pic. And there should be 15 pins in the chain between the two timing marks.

Right, mine says the same thing, but is there a missprint somewhere in the system. Without the gears being on, the cam sproket guide pin is shown at 2 o-clock, mine is at 8 o-clock, that is where the question comes in. I'll have to check it closer tomorrow, past my bedtime. Thanks for your feed back.

Put cylinder 1 at tdc and make sure the two marks on the sprockets are pointed at each other. Then check the 15 pin thing

Just put the cam bolt in and turn the cam with a wrench.

are you sure it was on the compression stroke when you first
opened it up?
You know the crank makes two revolutions to the cams one.
Where was the rotor button pointing?

How would it do that if you had the timing chain off? You would just be changing the position of the cam. That wouldn't work?
