Default 95 ZJ Rolls and Clicks when in park

Ok guys sorry for the multiple posts but I have multiple problems (enough about me and on to my Jeep). She rolls sometimes when I put in park. I have noticed that if i wiggle the shifter as I put it in park it wont do it. I was hoping it's just a worn out shifter and not the tranny. I saw a post on here from a while ago about a recall but it seemed to be about a '98. My Jeep has 164K on the 4.0. tranny shifts great. Only on a very very odd occasion it when cold will rev a little high before shifting into second.. Any advice is appreciated!

All that is happening is that the pawl is not going into a hole right away. I suspect you might need to adjust the shifter cable a little. Take the cable loose on the tranny end and then put it in park manually and see if the cable attaches easily. If not, adjust it so it will. Then perform the same test for drive. When you get it dialed in it will work properly

Got it! Thanks for the quick reply.. I'll give it a go this weekend and report back to base! I should have mentioned that it only starts most of the time in Neutral so I thought the NSS was shot as well but do you think it could be the cable adjustment too?

I wouldn't rule it out, but it may just need cleaning. Be careful if you take it apart. They can be fragile

So sorry its been awhile.. Is it possible that I have a linkage and not a cable.. I climbed under it and could not find a NSS switch or a cable.. Was I just not looking hard enough?
Thanks!

The NSS is located just above the lip for the transmission pan. Looking up from underneath on the drivers side it is near the 2nd bolt for the cover. It is kind of above the transmission pan. The area around it is crowded and it is difficult to find.

In order to remove the part you will need a deep well 1" socket, a wrench will not work. It is recessed as you look at it from below. You will also need to remove the bracket that holds the NSS wire, located directly next to the sensor. (The socket wrench will likely not fit if you do not remove this bracket). The bracket is held on by a size 14mm bolt. After removing the bracket, place the socket and socket wrench on the sensor and loosen it. You will lose some ATF fluid in the process.

You should get a Cherokee now too, since you already have the NSS for one!
