Default Nss replaced now it rolls in park

Hey guys. Working on replacing the nss on a buddies 99 cherokee sport . We have no parking gear. The jeep will start in the park position but the driveshaft doesn't lock. The jeep just rolls in park. Reverse lights come on in reverse so it doesn't seem like the replacement nss needs adjusting. Any ideas?

Did this start when the NSS was replaced?

Not sure how the NSS could cause this, but then, I don't know a whole lot about the AW4.

I'm not sure either unless it's installed in such a way the shifter can't move to Park. But I'd think you'd notice that in the cab.

Do you hear anything when it rolls? Ie a clang or banging sound from the rear end?

Its my Jeep the OP is talking about and we are pretty stumped. I bought an ebay brand new in box NSS and went to work extracting the old one. Well it broke and to get by for a few days we bypassed the NSS by jumping the wires on the stock OEM harness NSS side , not the Jeep's engine harness side obviously. Now the CEL came on ( P0705 )

Installed the new NSS today, adjusted it spot on so the lines line up on the shaft and the NSS, and the reverse lights work just fine. Touched the two battery cables together, hopped in and started it up in Park. Fired right up, but after 10 seconds the CEL came back on. Upon releasing the Parking brake, the AW4 auto still let the jeep roll as if it was in Neutral.

I am no rookie when it comes to working on jeeps, I cycled through all the gears and when it went in park, I can hear the syncros move etc ( I know its physically in park so we can rule out the linkage)

I guess my main guess would be a defective switch, still throwing the range selector CEL after replacement, it wont start in neutral, only Park, and the linkage seems a ok. Also in the BEST of my knowledge it is adjusted properly as I have reverse lights when placed in reverse.

ANY guesses or input are greatly appreciated!

Not to suggest the obvious, but the transfer case didn't get bumped?

This^

Are you able to drive it? Is the park concern the only problem or will it not engage any position?

Park concern is the only problem. I shifted the n 231 and it went through its motions perfectly. Jeep drives just fine minus the CEL and Park not stopping the jeep once it is at rest.

Broken spring or parking pin? I like the others think this is a separate problem from the nss switch.

Yes, pretty sure the parking pin is controlled only by that shifter cable.

I will admit, a few times I clamped down one the rod that the NSS slides on and physically took it out of gear. Do we think that could have taken it out of adjustment, or did I break the parking pawl?

that's why I asked if he's driven it. I asked that question earlier. But yes, the first time I put my tc in neutral I wasn't expecting the tranny in park to be "overruled" but it makes sense.
