I have a 95 grand Cherokee 5.2L, automatic, torque converter went out I was told it was a 46RE got a torque converter and the slots on shaft are too small for tranny, it has 23 spline out put shaft but old torque converter has bigger slots I can't find any tags or identification markings please help only numbers I found were 049-2 on bellhousing and PK52118327 2032 5382 on side of transmission

Welcome to the forum.

The '95 ZJ w/ the 5.2L engine has the 46RH transmission.

Why is the torque converter the suspected cause of the transmission problem? The torque converter is usually replaced because of a transmission failure and that the contaminated fluid it contains cannot be drained or flushed.

That transmission has the lockup torque converter. That torque converter on my model year has one of the four mounting bolts offset by 5°, plus that bolt is marked on both the torque converter and the flex plate. That offset mounting hole probably applies to yours also.

Here is my 46RH Rebuild topic.

Here is the replacement torque converter for my transmission. It fit fine.

The PK 52118327 is the transmission part number. That is identical to my transmission part number.

The 2032 is the transmission build date.

The 5382 is the transmission serial number.

The 049-2 is the transmission case mold casting number. Mine was similar at 049-3, until I smoothed and polished that off during the rebuild.

Please notice he said 46RH, not 46RE. The RE is electronically shifted. The RH is hydraulically shifted.

VERY NICE writeup Wingless! That's the first time I actually read it!

Yes, the 46RE is incorrect. The '95 w/ the 5.2L has the 46RH transmission.

The slots on the end of the torque converter shaft engage these small oil pump tabs, on the ID of the inner gerotor rotor. The slots don't need to be huge like the OEM or my replacement part.

I can get in start it up drive it it's fine once it warms up it starts whinning out and won't drive I shut it off wait 30 seconds I can start it back up and drive it sometimes a mile sometimes feet but shifts fine I was told it was torque converter, The transmission was supposedly rebuilt recently, he had a receipt for filter and gasket and dex3 tranny fluid so not sure what's going on if it's because wrong tranny fluid or what I bought torque converter but it won't lock all the way in and I noticed the new one has smaller slots.

Please post an image of the torque converter that won't fit.

The only fluid that should be used in the transmission is ATF+4, never Dex3.

The transmission retains lots of fluid during a change, so restoring the correct fluid will be difficult. Loosening the valve body from the transmission will help to remove more of the incorrect fluid. Blowing out the cooler lines will also help. The torque converter also holds old fluid, so using a replacement that fits will help to restore the correct fluid.

Is the vehicle assembled? If so, the FSM details tests that are useful to diagnose the problem.
