Default need help planning on purchasing a 96 grand cherokee, need some advice

hello everyone.

i am looking at purchasing a 96 grand cherokee. i will provide a link below so you can see the pictures of it.

i took it for a test drive today it drove really nice but had some issue with notice i the rear end not sure what it was/is but they are goign to fix it.

but more or less mixed in with the front bumper is something i've never seen before on a vehicle.

two spots look almost like tow ports like my mothers kia rio had but not quite the same. it also had what i can only disribe as 3 or 4 poles also sticking out between those other holes.

i am thinking its some kind of towing option that you can hook stuff up to and pull stuff out but the 3 or 4 poles confuse me.

i am buying this as a backup vehicle.

right now i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee but this one i want to buy is slightly different

i forgot to check while there if it was a v6 or v8 as the description says its both, but its a 4wd and i am not sure what the different 4wd options on it mean or if its even able to turn them off. my current jeep is a v6 4l but its 2wd. i've had it since 06 and have been happy with it, which is the reason i am looking at another jeep.

i will say this one i plan on getting looks to be in better condition than my current one, maybe not so much after my current repairs get done. i've been without ac in florida since 2006 and thats being fixed.

thanks

ryan from florida

I'm not a huge fan of Grand Cherokees but it looks like a fair deal at $1,800.00. I'd offer a tad less but it's got a nice clean interior. I'd love to get my hands on the leather seats.

That Jeep has a 4.0L Straight 6. Same as the one in your current Jeep.

What advice are you needing?

the one in the link has the 249 all wheel drive/full time 4x4 transfer case and is a 6cyl

the bracket under the front bumper might have been for a surf rod holder

I have no clue what that thing is under the bumper,But for the price as long it runs and drives fine i would buy it at 1800 but try for 1600 if you can.

well i decided today not to buy it.

i went for a second test drive after the first problem was fixed.

i told him there was still a couple of things wrong with it but i was not a mechanic to know if they was small simple and cheap or expensive repairs i'd have to get done and just purchasing it alone on my credit card will tap me for a while from anything major (besides my current jeep is having about 500-600 worth of repairs done and thast just the parts i've bought and there is going to be more when the mechanic gets into it and determines whats wrong with the doors/windows and the horn).

i told him there was two more things that needed attention but he said at that price he is not doing anything else and i could not justify purchasing it if he can' t even get his mechanic to look at it and determine what the problem is.

the first problem is the breaks, they feel as if you are not getting any real power assistance. i mean the vehicle stops but its not easy a woman or frail person might have problems using them but there was no abs light or anything like that on. as i told the person with me that my jeeps breaks work so much better and i know they have problems i have to replace the break pads, and rotors on it.

i told him per the manual in the jeep that having mixed tire sizes could be the cause (the front tires was bigger than the back tires). i think the fronts was 225/70/16 and the back tires was 215/75/16

the other problem was when you got to 50mph there started a noticeable vibration in the vehicle so much if you let go the steering wheel you could see it moving. i told him about this as well, i told him this could be something as simple as out of balanced tires or something in the front end going bad, and its the second one i am worried about cause i wouldn't have money for many months to fix it.

one reason i don't like purchasing used vehicles. i have an escort that may also be getting fixed soon too so that would be a backup vehicle if needed.

i was not even considering asking for a lower price as i thought that was a fair price for it i just didn't like his answer that for the price of the vehicle he thinks it drives fine and is not putting anything else into it.

now even if he fixed it that one statement he said would make me worry of other problems that might be covered up.

so for now i just am sticking with my first jeep i am having repairs done to it this weekend (exhaust manifold repair/replacement, front windows repairs, ac system replacement and a new stereo system installed.

it will be nice to have ac in it after not for the last 7 years.

oh by the way those bars on the bumper i've been told was for a bull bar, bumper, grill etc.
