Agree. The 42re despite all the bad press, with clean fluid, bands correctly adjusted, and new solenoids, maybe an output speed sensor, is pretty good stuff. A lot of other things can affect it like tv cable, and worn dizzy shaft, but as you make the repairs you will see it improve the risk/reward is not worth the swap. 'generally'. Oh, another thing is a bottle of Lucas transmission fix. Restores some like pressure, and I had no probs yet after 5 months.

My experience with the 42re has been illuminating. I bought a grocery and kids transporter with 125K on it with full service records from PA. I've put 67K on it using it for delivering newspapers; constant stops and starts, K-turns, downshifting on hills, and heavily loaded. It had a T-Tech (full fluid transfer) service at 105K and I changed the filter and pan contents at 165K. The pan showed NO debris, a little grey material settled in the pan and a few tiny whiskers of metal on the magnet. More like a 5-o'clock shadow than a beard! The only thing making it show it's age is being a little slow to engage at sub-zero temperatures. I fix that by warming it up in neutral before starting out of the driveway. I still shifts solidly and cleanly when asked to, like accelerating for a merge or passing. It has 192K on it now. It DOES need a torque converter solenoid, however. All in all, I think that's pretty good service.
Personally, I have a "thing" about additives. Most of them just soften the o-rings for better sealing, but they tend to get brittle shortly afterward. JMHO.
