I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 318. I think but I'm not positive that its a 46RH transmission. Last week the transmission started popping and then two days ago the 4 wheel drive jumped into neutral while I was driving. I checked the transmission fluid. It's fine. Checked the transfer case for gear oil. It was very low so I filled it and it's still doing it. It still has the original motor with 313,000 miles on it. I've already replaced the fuel pump, starter, radiator and the crankshaft position sensor by myself and I'm no mechanic. I'm just a girl. A very determined girl who refuses to let this jeep have the last laugh.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or tips you could give me on what the problem may be.

When it "pops" is it the transmission or the transfer case that's shifting and are the selectors moving to neutral? What Sportrider said is probably true, but it could be the transfer case linkage is out of adjustment causing it not to be fully engaged in the first place.
I would suspect the trans mount is soaked with oil and turned soft and gummy and is allowing the T-case to move around.
If you're not the original owner, and I assume you're not, That motor was taken care of.
Welcome to CF! There is a treasure trove of information on this site, but keep in mind it is an OPINION site and all answers may of may not be correct. That being said, we'll do what we can to help.

HA!! Motor mounts? What motor mounts? They are almost nonexistent. That's next on my list. Thank you for the tip sportrider. I'll be sure to do that next.
Everything under my jeep is soaked with oil. I didn't know that would cause an issue like what you describe though. I'm taking it to a friend who is a mechanic. Transmissions are beyond my capabilities...for now. The jeep was passed down from my Mom to my brother to me. I love the stinking thing and I'm attached to it for some reason. Love CF btw. Been creeping around for months. That's how I knew my crankshaft position sensor needed changing. I keep coming back again and again.
Thank you both for your tips and time. Much appreciated.

Yeah, Jeeps kinda get under your skin, don't they?
There's something about a woman with a radical off-road Jeep that stirs my blood. Not sure what it is though. Just saying.

transfer case linkage probably needs to be adjusted. spray it down with pb blaster beforehand, its probably pretty rusty and seized up. also, the transfer case takes atf, not gear oil.

Oh yes. It's gotten under my skin, under my fingernails, in my hair, in my eyes and I'm pretty sure it's even gotten in my ears. I love it though.

Turns out I need to replace my transfer case. I've found one but I'm not sure if it will work on my jeep. How do I tell what kind of transfer case I have. I'm guessing it's a NP249 but I'm not sure. Will a 96-98 fit my 94?

Get under you jeep and there is a tag that is silver and red on your transfer case.. it will say "new process gear" around it and it will have a np-249 for example.. and yes the transfer case is interchangeable between Cherokees and Grand Cherokees thru all years I believe.. I know the one you found will work on your current jeep tho..
