2001 GCL
Hi everyone i need some hlep with my 2001 GLC. there is something wrong with either the front drive shaft or the transfer case. While driving it sounds like i am rolling a metal bar down the highway and then when i try to put it in 4wd it whines really loud. Do i need to take out this trans case or is therer a simple fix. thanks again

it is constant it does stop every once in awhile but for the most part its all the time. as for the 4wd whining noise, i only tried it in part time 4wd and when i accelerated it thats when the noise began so i immediately pulled over and put it in 2wd because i didn't want to cause more damage

Well the first thing to do is to find out where its coming from.
I would recommend removing your front drive shaft to see if the noise goes away. While you have it off, check the CV joint on the TC end of the driveshaft. Also check to see if you have play on the front output shaft at the TC.
I would hate to hear that you tore apart your TC when all along it was the Differential carrier bearings!

ok i got under my jeep this weekend and i was able to pull the rear end of the front drive shaft out with my hands, i didn't loosen anything....is that the way its supposed to be? anyway i do believe that it is the cv joint at the transfer case end, so i ordered one. let me know if that front drive shaft is supposed to be able to do that? thanks again

Um,, no thats not supposed to happen. There should have been six bolts holding the CV joint onto a flange sticking out of the TC. Did you remove the front driveshaft? does it still make the noise when you drive?

the snap ring holds the CV joint onto the splined end of the drive shaft. Slide on the CV joint, the the snap ring goes in the groove on the end of the drive shaft
