Default 1995 ZJ gaskets for oil pan and diffs

I have a 95 ZJ recently purchased and planning on changing the transmission fluid and filter (42RE transmission) and fluid for both axles (Dana 30 & Dana 35C).

Since the transfer case is a NP249 (AWD) I've been told that the differential axle fluid needs to be 70W - 140W. I suspect this is because of AWD stress on the diffs and axles, etc.

I purchased a Wix transmission filter but have reservations about using their rubber gasket as I've experienced leaks in the past using aftermarket gaskets.

I can get a Mopar OEM trans op gasket (p/n 4295875) for $20.00. Which I'm told are reusable and require no sealant?

I'm going to also change the differential axle fluid. The Jeep parts manual shows a sealer is used as a gasket.

I found a couple of Fel-Pro paper type gaskets for both differential covers and some black silicon sealant.

The other question is my transmission oil pan doesn't have a drain plug and while I have the oil pan removed I'm thinking of installing a drain plug.
Is this a good idea?

So far I've found

B&M - $13.54
Supieror Solution - $16.50
Dorman - $6.54

Or I could get an aftermarket oil pan with drain plug for around ~$25.00.

I have some spare Magnefine ext. oil filters I'm thinking of installing one on the trans cooling lines for additional filtering

I hear good reviews about lube locker gaskets but have not tried them myself yet

Lube locker gaskets work great, they are reusable and no RTV mess.

I looked on the Lube Locker website and they look very similar to the Mopar 4295875 price with shipping $20.00
The Lube Locker gasket for the for the 42RE least expensive price with shipping is $33.71

I wonder how they compare?

For the transmission either one is fine, I would probably go with Mopar, get the Lube lockers for the axles.

I couldn't find any rubber gaskets for the axle diffs only paper fiber ones.

I ended up purchasing from eBay a MOPAR 04295875AC for $19.99 and the Lube Locker gaskets for the Dana 30 and 35, at $21.99 each.

A bit pricey but I don't like playing around with rubber and paper which often requires a silicon sealant. In the past I've had problems with leaks.

My 98 XJ with the AW4 I ended up using. Permatex RED High Tack Gasket Sealant with a metal fiber gasket which has so far worked great. However Red High tack eventual dries hard. When installing a new gasket alot of scraping and cleaning is usually required before installing another gasket. RTV potentially works only if you precisely follow their directions.

Over the long run you may be spending nearly as much on gaskets and tubes of sealant costing from around $7.00 to over $10.00 each. New paper or rubber gaskets are at least a few or several dollars each. Some of those transmission filter kits with gaskets run around $25.00. If you have a reusable gasket all you need to purchase for the transmission is another filter.

It's not a good idea to use any kind of silicone on a transmission pan.

I don't normally use silicon. My XJ I used Red High Tack which isn't a silicon. The gasket was made from a combination of fiber and metal.

For the 95 ZJ transmission oil pan I ordered the gasket using the p/n from the Jeep OEM parts manual MOPAR p/n 04295875AC

The Jeep OEM parts manual shows for the differential covers to use p/n 4318025 SEALER, (RTV) but I ordered the rubber re-usable Lube Locker gaskets instead.

As for tightening the bolts I've found that the 42RE oil pan bolts need to be tighten to
Oil Pan Bolt 17 N-m (13 ft. lbs) (5/16"-18 × 5/8" )
Oil Filter Screws 4 N-m (35 in lbs.)

However looking in the service manual at the Dana 30 and 35 diff cover bolts torque values I'm finding
Diff. Cover Bolt ........................41 Nzm (30 ft. lbs.) for a 5/16 inch diameter course thread bolt (5/16 is close to 8mm)

Front axle - J0273573 BOLT .312-18 x .562 tighten to 41 Nzm (30 ft. lbs)
Rear axle - J4006708 BOLT - Pan Head. .312-18x.56 tighten to 41 Nzm (30 ft. lbs)

.3125 = 5/16 inch

I'm not certain what's going on here. A 5/16 - 18 bolt SAE Grade 8 and Grade 9 torque values are under 30 ft lbs.

If you look at metric grade a 8mm grade 12.9 bolt standard torque - lubricated 32 Nm / 23.6 ft lbs and dry 42.6 Nm / 31.4 ft-lb

Some people have broke off 5/16 grade 5 and 8 bolts while trying to torque to 35 foot lbs and possibly 30 ft lbs.

let's say you loose one or more of the OEM diff cover bolts and go to the local hardware store and find grade 8 5/16 course bolt.

standard torque values for a grade 8 5/16 in. course thread bolt = lubricated - 18.4 ft-lbs / dry - 24.6 ft lbs. which is under 30 ft lbs. So it appears Mopar is using a higher than grade 8 bolt for the diff pan covers?

Some aftermarket diff covers as well as instructions for installing gaskets may call for as high as 35 foot lbs torque. This was true of TeraFlex diff covers.where TeraFlex was providing too low grade bolts for the diff covers with instruction to first tighten to 15 foot lbs and then 35 foot lbs.

Lube Locker use to have a tightening sequence for a Dana 44 and other axle diff covers of tightening to 15 then 35 foot lbs but have since changed their instructions to use the OEM torque values for the vehicle.

So anyway I think since the Lube Lockers work best at higher torque values you may want to use the OEM Mopar diff cover bolts and not Grade 8 or even a Grade 9. I'm uncertain about the grade of the OEM diff cover bolts. AFAIK OEM is using 5/16 - 18 SAE bolts and the service manual shows to tighten them to 30 foot lbs.

FYI, I found the 30 foot lbs. torque specifications for the diff cover bolts is for the OEM type bolts that have ridges where contact is made to the diff/axle housing.

Regular Grade 8 bolts have a max. torque specification of 25 foot lbs. I've read of people breaking off these bolts using grade 8 non oem bolts. Lube Locker and some of the aftermarket hd diff covers use to have instructions to tighten to 35 foot lbs and some people were breaking of bolts. Lube Locker changed their instructions to torque to OEM specs.

To clarify 30 foot pound torque specification is only for OEM bolts that aren't smooth and have ridges (where the bolt contacts the axle/diff housing) . I had one non oem bolt without ridges and it kept turning where the oem bolts torqued down at 30 foot lbs without any problems.

If your oem bolts are worn they may or may not torque to 30 foot lbs.

Using new Crown OEM type bolts all 20 torqued down to 30 foot lbs. If you're using regular non oem, smooth, grade 8 bolts you may only want to torque to 25 foot lbs.

Anyway my 2 cents on the matter.
