Default 1993 Transfer Case

Hello all. Quick question. I am looking to buy a 1993 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0. It seems to run and ride fine, but it sounds like the tcase is making some noise. It has 220K on it, but the body and frame seem to be real solid. The shift select has 4x4 neutral and 4lo as the options. Knowing this is a problem and only being $600 for the Jeep, I am wondering how to tell what the Tcase model is without tearing things apart so I can start researching a replacement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if the answer is pull stuff apart, I understand, just trying to see if this is going to be a $200 or $2000 fix with parts.

From your description of the shift pattern, you have the np249 constant 4x4 t/case. It's possible the viscous clutch has died.

For a good tutorial on t/cases, go to http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...-np242-685644/

Thanks guys. Already into the link reading up and will bring a light and blanky ;-) to crawl under it as we will most likely have snow again tonight. Will let you know what I find. Reading, looks like I could do the VC myslf, or at least start some trouble with it before handing it off to someone if that is the case.

One other quick question, where would I go to buy a VC? I am not finding it at AutoZone.

He does mean the viscous coupling and he can find it on jeep4x4center.com

OOPS! I said that too fast. I just checked and didn't find it. Wait one....It looks like eBay or Amazon is the easiest place to look.

Yes! That's one reason many people decide to swap to something else. The np231 is good, but I prefer the np242.

Sunday morning we got total white-out squalls and wet sloppy snow. I had my 242 in part time all night doing my papers. Last night it was 5*F and the snow around the mailboxes was crunchy frozen, so I had it in full time all night, two wheels on dry pavement and two in the snow. I have a "girlfriend" that does papers with a Ford Explorer and she is sick about what my jeep can do that her Explorer can't. We even have the same tires! I backed up a steep hill that her Explorer won't even drive up easily! If she stops on this hill, she can't get started again. The best part is she talked herself out of buying a WJ in the first place!
