Replaced the starter a couple months ago because it was completely dead. Luckily it happened when I parked at the supermarket really close to home. So I walked home, grabbed some tools and a spare starter from my pile, used the van to drive back to the jeep.
Fast forward to couple days ago. I picked my son up from the daycare. Yup it's dead. I managed to start the jeep after like 15 mins. I immediately drove home without stopping. (Didn't really want to pay for a tow).
Yesterday morning. I went back in my garage and scrounged up all the starters I had in my collection. I rounded up about 8 starters total.
I had a reman starter (probably from a part out of something but it was missing the solenoid.
I took the solenoid out of the 2nd starter and put it on the reman unit (I still had to pull the armature out so I can polish the contact area).
All is good now
But what if it happened again? I decided I ll go ahead and rebuild another starter completely. And leave it in the jeep along with some tools it takes to swap the starter out.
I picked best looking one from the remaining pile, tore into it & cleaned parts up. I took everything off the aluminum chunk and I had it blasted clean with glass beads.
Washed & polished the armature, cleaned the stator, cleaned the planetary gears, cleaned the brush assembly (it's getting worn out so I probably should buy new one). I think I probably should paint the steel casing. Instead of black, prob do lime green?
Might have my wife print out a sticker that says "rebuilt by meanlemons" or "remanufactured by MeanLemons". Something like that. Lol

Selling rebuilt starters.
Could have been another hustle on the side. LOL.
I remember about 5 years ago leaving work my Jeep would not start.
Little love tap and she cranked right up.
Said to myself that's once.
Happened again leaving work a couple days later.

Was able to buy a new, not remanned, starter through Napa.
So far so good.
I always wondered if getting doused with oil when you remove the oil filter was part of the problem. Figure it does not help.
I got in the habit of covering the starter with rags when doing an oil change.
My boostwerks np242 linkage arrived. It’s a step closer to doing the t case swap.
You have a 231 and are going to swap to a 242?
I am going to be interested in this cause I would like to do the same thing myself.
I have the bezel and shifter gate. LOL.
I might have that little jumper harness too that I read you need to make your Fulltime 4X4 light light up on the cluster.
I have this little harness that unfortunately I did not label that I must have picked up in my travels.
It think that is what it is. MLOL.
And figure when I do get around to this will do the linkage upgrade too.

Yes. I swapped in a 242 in place of a 231 on my other XJ and then on my MJ (granted, both of them are ax-15's. But I love how it performs so I knew I wanted it on this XJ too.
I used the 242 on my other XJ a lot and I don't even notice the full time light not working. (I'm ocd about factory stuff working, but after a while I realize I don't even look at it anyway.
