Mine is a 79 F150 front, you can do waggy 44 front's, but they are 6 lug. 76 and 77 Ford D44's have welded on wedges, hard to find. But more user friendly. 78 and 79', like mine, have cast radius arm mounts, check my build thread to see what I did there.

You can run late 70's F250 Dand 44's, driver drop units, but Low pinion. There are tons of options, you need to do some research.
Also, they all have different widths, so think about that to when you're deciding on axle choice..

all of this ^. I have a 77 ford d44 thats being retubed with now. you need to do some research and figure out if its worth it to you do build a custom axle. you will be dropping some serious money to build one correct.

Re-tubed just to narrow it? 77 should have welded on mounts that can be cut off.

You can build on a budget too. I bought my front hp44 for 450.00. 4.88 gears, detroit, DOM steering with 1-ton tie rod ends, Warn Hubs. Bough a nine inch for 100.00, 100 for the spool 125.00 for 4.86's, 100.00 for an install kit. Less than a grand front and rear geared, locked, and steering.

But then again, some people may not consider mine build correct?

yes it getting re-tubed. got it free but the passenger side tube was bent. did you keep the stock radius arms? and the built correct comment. come on you know you have seen some bad fab work. thats what I meant by it. the price you paid for your d44 was a steal! good work!

Gotcha, yeah a bent tube would suck. Yes, I modified the stock ford arms, kept the wedges. And yes again, the fab work can be timely and expensive depending. I have opted to do all the work myself, all the metal has been free through work, which has helped a ton. It's still a ton of work to put an axle from a different vehicle under your XJ and do it right. Way more than I thought it would be.

how you like the ford radius arms? almost bought a wedge d44 but this fell in my lap. if you keep the stock jeep control arms you also need to figure in the price for bracket kit for the axle. that takes time to weld and $$. I have everything sitting in the shop just waiting for it to be retubed. 5.13's arb, superior shafts with ctm's, warn lock out. should have built this months ago instead of spending $$ on the crappy d30 and rubi44. live and learn i guess
