My last 2 cars had your symptoms and it ended up being a bad coil pack both times. Mine were individual though so I was able to determine which one it was by switching them around. I think cherokees use a rail though so I'm not sure how you would figure it out without another rail. Mine is a 97 and I never messed with the distributorless 4.0s so i could be completely wrong. LOL. Hope you get it figured out soon. Love the clean look.

gahhh. i think it was something so simple ive been overlooking this whole time b/c it kind of slipped my mind and i forgot about it.
my buddy pointed it out... but i had an issue with the bolts on the coil rail seeming like they were too long (i somehow cant find the stock ones)... so we went and got some shorter bolts... and when we tightened it down it seemed like it was much better. drove it to autozone, cleared the codes... and nothing yet!
so keep your fingers crossed it dont come back so i can get this thing inspected and on the road for good.

so the problem never really went away. got the exhaust fixed up, still ran really rough, would chug/sputter really bad. finally got to rent a compression tester, and cylinder 5 intake lifter was acting up, then it completely failed/collapsed during the compression test and we lost all compression on cylinder 5. i took the valve cover off and the rocker arm was super loose, so i pushed the push rod down and you could hear the oil coming out of the lifter and it would never free up. ugh. head comes back off.
i shouldve replaced them damn things
