This project is just screaming for an SRT-4 Dodge 2.4L Turbo swap.
That's 250whp & 260tq stock & an easy 400 hp & tq with just bolt-on's. It's about as close to a direct swap as you're going to get & those things are light, reliably over-built, easy to find, & cheap ($2000 new from the dealer) compared to a stroker.
You best believe if my 4.0L kicks the bucket... it's a no brainer.

well first things first. The plan is to go as fast as possible on the 4.0L. once that is pushed to its limits, then I will find a motor swap, but given the main objective of this jeep is to go straight, Im not going to be looking at motors without enough pistons, or imported for that matter
I have been considering making a turboed 4 banger cherokee, that could scream through the twisties, so maybe srt4 jeep is on down the road, but I think that could be cooler in a slammed wrangler, either a TJ, or an old army ******

Chris Durham's already done an SRT-4 swap in his TJ HERE but he's using a custom trans adaptor plate. There are about a dozen other direct swaps for transmission options.

"The Neon engine shares a bellhousing pattern with the 2.4 found in the late model TJ (2003-up), so if you got a trans out of one of those that would probably be the best bet"
"Basically you use a jeep liberty bellhousing which oddly bolts to the Toyota Supra R-154, and that bellhousing bolts to the SRT block. IIRC you have to shave about 1/2" of material off the face of the bellhousing to insure full spline engagement into the clutch disk"
"Of course a SRT swap is possible...I didnt do it that way myself since I didnt want my manifolds pointing back at the firewall...besides, regardless a 420a head flows just as well...the na 2.4l block is the same except for oil squirters, it actually makes little sense to use a true SRT engine if you plan to rebuild it anyway...but yes, you use a Jeep RWQD 2.4L bell, a toyota supra R154 manual tranny and voila!...alternatively you can use a 2.5L dakota bell and a R154(which is a direct bolt up as far as the tranny goes)"
