Noob teen build.
My goal for this thread is to show how i progress in learning about the 2000 Cherokee Sport my dad and my 15 yo self picked up earlier this week.
It has 65k miles and almost no rust.
Because my dad and i are mechanically challenged
We took it into the shop and they gave us an outrageous estimate for parts an labor. Look at my last post to see.
Seriously though, we know next to nothing about fixing cars. But were learning!
My dad had the guys there only do the things that a friend of ours told us to do. So belts and oil.
We got it back from the shop and the headliner is sagging pretty badly, so i decided i wanted to change it. I looked up some stuff online and started going at it. My two younger brothers decided they wanted to help, and it was so much easier having a second and third pair of hands.
I first took off the visors, and struggled with the electronic disconnect.
We got all the trim out fairly easily. Its just tedious work.
Im the third owner, and the previous owner told me that the original owner had an aftermarket sunroof installed. It works and its great. But whoever did it was kinda lazy and didnt think much of the car itself.
The sunroof switch was giving me a hard time too.
Then after i got the headliner out, i saw how poorly this was done.
Also, they cut the crossplate on the roof and took a portion and put it over the hole in the headliner where the light used to be.
The person who installed the sunroof didnt know how to remove headliner either. So its completely torn up and bent and basically i wont be able to use the same board over again. So i need to shop for fabric and a headliner board. Unless i can find some some way to reinforce it.
Hopefully you guys follow along and give me feedback on what you think!

Looks like a good project to learn some skills on. Have you picked up a service manual yet? If you're interested in learning more on how the different systems work, you can always buy a used Auto Tech textbook off of eBay or Amazon.
For your headliner, you might want to check out the local junkyards for a new headliner board or look on craigslist for someone parting out a XJ in your area.
Good luck with your Jeep man!

Im 99.9% positive almost any year headliner would work from 97-01. And by rear light covers do you mean the rear light housings on the outside? If so 97-01 would be direct

Not really sure what you mean by that. I know theres a screw on the hatch that i can undo to pull it off im pretty sure.
And awesome. Ill call a few of these guys. I found today after fulling the fabric off, that it was orange and gross and smells like smoke. So i definitely want to get that replaced.
Also, you guys know if i still need to take something off of the headliner board? I pulled the fabric, but theres the hard cardboard and then a foam with some small layer of fabric. No other write ups look like this.
Then heres the edge of it.
Any more clarification would be helpful.

Seriously though! When i called i asked if it was a typo!
Another thing. I need shocks, like i said already, but now after driving it a little bit, i noticed some rear passenger sag. Took a look at the leaf springs and it isnt bending the right way.
Heres the one in question
Heres the one on the opposite side.
Not sure if you guys can see the difference in the bend. But its fairly significant.
Any particular brand you recommend?
And it it a job i can do myself?

Looking to stay at stock height? No rust you said? Easy to do.
Look on quadratec for replacement springs. Their s or Old Man Emu.
You'll need new u bolts too. D35 gets 2-5/8? And 8.25 gets 3".
21mm socket
19mm socket
Breaker bar
PB blaster
And a 15mm to take the rear sway bar off so you can throw it away.

Breaker bar for more leverage and Pb blaster to let the bolts soak so they don't break or anything.
Do you have cruise control?
