But then it isn't a sleeper because there's a big engine hanging out the back

Well with all the trouble with the Jetta, and my welding buddy free for a little bit, I got the steel for the sliders and got the rockers cut out. Hopefully I'll get them done tomorrow Highschool budget 1999 xj build-photo751.jpgHighschool budget 1999 xj build-photo117.jpgHighschool budget 1999 xj build-photo333.jpg inner rockers look pretty much rust free so that's good.

Passenger side 2x6 in. Plumbed for air and a coat of paint. I plan to go back and seal all the gaps between the welds with something, but not sure yet.

You mean instead of short stitch welds? And I don't feel like there going anywhere yet, but I won't tie in till I put on frame stiffeners.

Yea. Will make it harder for crap to get between the 2x6s an sheet metal. I welded the whole thing hoping to not have to worry about rust and some added strength being fully welded in. I have stiffeners that I need to get on mine too.

The guy I had welding it just did stitches and I wasn't complaining since it's free. I'll put some caulk or possibly fill it in with my flux core machine since it wouldn't have to be structural welds. For now I'm just happy it's on and I'm too busy to do any other crap to it. The jeep is getting neglected pretty bad. Only reason I drove it today was to finish the other slider up.

Ah haha makes sense. Can't complain about free. I had mine on stands doing other repairs. It's a great mod to do for sure.

That's my thought process. Makes the jeep feel better just driving on the road. Really need to get the fender flares trimmed and back on, get the bumpstops/ fender trimming all figured out so it's good to wheel again.

Has been a little while since I’ve added to this thread. I think I have the bumpstops halfway right for the front and if not I guess I’ll just scrub fender like crazy next trip and end up cutting them. I sold my daily so my Cherokee is back on daily duty, trying to decide some future plans for it. The sliders double as air tanks, so I need to get a manifold to run my compressor to my tanks and to hook a hose up to for tire filling. Also need to get a pressure switch for my compressor since it wasn’t designed to be hard mounted like this... also been tossing up the idea of getting boostwerks shackles and the shock towers for the rear. The shocks are what limit my flex the most in the rear, and I seem to always get hung on the mounts since they hang so low. Once I get the towers in I’ll have to do some figuring and decide if I would run 12” or 14” travel shocks might could even get by with my 10” travel shocks just in a better location than factory. Most of this is theoretical at this point and I’d have to wait till my roommate finishes his one ton swap/4 link front and rear so he could weld the stuff up for me since my 110 harbor freight won’t cut it. Trying to decide also what to do if I get the shock towers. I don’t want the cross bar really so I’ve been curious if I can run it with just shocks without the cross bar since they’re also designed for coil overs, or maybe make a hoop out of it or shelf out of it so it isn’t just a bar there. Anyway that’s some rambling about future plans and here’s how she sits now Highschool budget 1999 xj build-photo220.jpg

Dude, if you need any help just holler. I've got a decent welder, and I have bagged more than my share of mini trucks. I probably have enough air fittings laying around the house.
Let finish up this trans swap and we can get together.

If anyone is around uwharrie national forest, I’ll be there October 20-22 with the clemson offroad club. It’s a fun park to wheel and if anyone is around there it would be cool to meet new people as well. I believe chipmaker is planning on coming out for it as well.
