Long read, but worth it to see all the progress made. Beautiful XJ.
And for what it's worth, I'm firmly in the "keep the chrome" camp myself. Looks really good with the white/black combo.

I know someone with one (roof rack). Its a Ebay jobie, but looks stout. Has light tabs, tire mount, mounts to existing cross bows. I'm sure you could gutter mount it if you wanted.

So update
Pressure tested the cooling system and found the water pump gasket has shown itself to the outside world. So I got a new water pump, Upper and Lower Rad. hoses, thermostat, heater hoses, and a couple of bottles of coolant. Also got a replacement idler pulley cause mine went bad a while ago and I might as well put it on while I have the fans off.
We also tested the cooling system for combustion gasses. That came back postive so theres def. a problem. It could be a cracked black, cracked head, or a head gasket. I pray its not a cracked block and its very unlikly that the gasket is the only problem cause the oil is fine.

Well it could be epic if we pull off the head and find a cracked block...but I dont think it is.
I picked up my valve cover gasket and ordered a intake/exhaust gasket today
