actually the frame stiffeners aren't that difficult. Just take your time and have a bunch of c clamps.

Well today wasn't too fun. I tried to take the studs out from the frame that holds the trans cross member on and snapped both of them off. So now I have to fix it. I'm using a small hole saw to cut the area where the studs and nuts are and making a small plate with nuts welded on the backside then welding the plates to the bottom of the frame stiffeners. I'll put up pictures tomorrow.

Here's my fix for the trans mount.

Cut a hole with the holesaw in a 1/8" piece of sheetmetal scrap for a guide to cut the frame/ nut area out.

This us cut out to 1 1/8" .

A piece of 3/16" with 2 nuts welded to it.

Bolted the piece with 2 nuts to the crossmember to line everything up and tacked it to the frame. Then removed the crossmember and fully welded the plate to the frame.

Very genius. I guess you have to get that way when you are dealing with vehicles that are as old as ours.

Ok I'm down to building a rear bumper. I am going with a tire carrier but with a hoop to set the tire on it and the it down with a Y ratchet strap. Anyone have any rear bumper pics? Also I have the cut and fold quarters so what should I do for the finish off at those points?

On your bumper, are you going to make the bracket that holds the tire on the drivers side? There are not many rear bumpers that have that option, most are in the center or the passengers side. Its absolutely stupid for them to do that because usually there's a big spare that goes there and they are very difficult to see past, from the rear view mirror. I look forward in seeing what you build.

Actually I didn't think of the driver side option. I was going to put it on the passenger side. I'll make a cut out of cardboard and see what it looks like in the mirror. Good idea. I think off to one side is the way to go. It puts the tire close to the pivot point so there is less load on it from leverage.

XJallseasons,
You are the man! I just checked it out on both sides. The drivers side is way better than passengers side. Thanks for the thought.

Oh also that's a 35 inch cut out. I'm running 33's but can run 35's if I want.
