I see what your saying. Personally I'd rather pull the tcase, good time to inspect the internals and the chain. But the hack n tap is cheaper and that makes it appealing. Hmmm decisions....

Yeah I agree with the inspecting part which is why I was leaning towards tearing it down in the beginning. But after I read more on it as long as you don't beat the crap out of hack n' taps you're ok. So I figured until I have problems with it that is what Im going to go with. I think it is a personal preference in my opinion, but what do I know If you haven't decided by the time I get mine installed I will let you know what I think.

Yeah it's going to be a while. Waiting to save up for a lift. 500$ for shipping to kodiak AK plus the lift is kind of rediculous

Sounds about right. Give rockridge4wd a call. They sent my entire 4.5 lift, track bar, SYE, and BPEs for free. Also got some pretty sweet discounts on the prices too. They are based in Washington state and I'm in Virginia so...pretty awesome deal.

Yeah its expensive man! I'm trying to save money where I can but in the end for my lift and wheels and tires I'm going to be around $3000. I ordered all my stuff from rocksolidor.com. If you email them you will get a direct response from the owner and the guy knows his stuff, and if you don't see what you need on the website just email him and he will put it on there for you. I got free shipping also so you might want to check it out.

Just a thought for the SYE... I was originally going to do the HnT as well, but then got to thinking about things and figured everything in the t-case is about 176,000 miles old. I did the job in just a couple hours time and have a new chain in there as well. It was a piece of cake!

That makes a really good point. I started out wanted to do the full SYE till I had the t case looked over and everything in it is perfect and I guess the previous owner had it serviced about 100,000 miles and I am currently at 105,000.

ok so i just joined this forum, and just bought my first jeep. a 98 2 door 5 speed. im looking to do a 3in lift, but i want to do it right. due to money problems im going to have to piece it together, and put it all on once i have everything. so my questions is, what is everything i need to do a proper 3in lift keeping both front and rear sway bars.

sorry for jumping in on this thread, also both your jeeps look great, hope mine turns out as well.

What brands are you planning on piecing together? For a 3 inch lift you will need coil springs, leaf springs, shocks, front and rear extended brake lines, track bar, extended sway bar links, and lower control arms. I would also plan on doing a SYE and you might as well do the upper control arms while you are doing everything else. I think think that is everything.

I would recommend rubicon express or old man emu. More expensive but you won't regret the ride quality. A SYE is a slip yoke eliminator. You will need that and a rear CV drive shaft. Rubicon express makes both of them. You will need to measure for the driveshaft after you lift your vehicle. Or you could even try it without a SYE and see if you have any drive line vibrations on Cherokees are different but since yours is newer I would plan on it.

Yeah there is a lot. The best advice my friend gave me was don't take a short cut on the lift cause you will just end up spending even more money in the future.

Yep, more than just some springs unfortunately. Well....if you want to do things correctly. Some folks don't care but I like my investments to last. The SYE (slip yoke eliminator) does just that. Your current rear drive shaft slides in and out of your transfer case. The yoke (what your driveshaft is secured to on bith ends) slides on a center shaft that is housed and bolted into the transfer case. They SYE will change out the center shaft and a new yoke is supplied that bolts directly to that center shaft. After that is done a double cardan shaft is attacked the double cardan is a telescoping shaft which allows for the movement that is no longer provided since the slip yoke is gone.

BTW, a front driveshaft from any year NP231 t case and automatic transmission will work up to 4.5ish inches of lift. Here's the cardan shaft and my the visual difference between the slip yoke and sye.

That rubber boot is where the slip action accurs.
