i really hate how most shops nowadays are all about replacing stuff and the easiest way out that will make them the most money. It's ridiculous that they are telling you that testing to determine the ACTUAL cause is not cost effective. To take a valve cover off is nothing, and a compression test is a extremely simple test to perform. They don't need to "pull it apart", they just need to run the tests - that's it. And a compression test most certainly will work.

$100-200 in diagnosis to pinpoint the issue is a lot better than spending 2-3 grand to replace the engine blindly.

I also have a great mechanic who works out of a shop in Greenbelt I could refer you to. I'm sure he'd have no problem doing some diag on it for a reasonable price.

LOL, the top rifle is a friend of mine's. It's a basic Bushmaster. My baby is below it. It's a Fulton Armory FAR-15, it's got a full Daniel Defense 12" floating forgrip/rail system, Magpul Mbus flip up iron sights, Magpul ACS stock, an EOTech XPS2 Holographic and a 20" stainless steel bull barrel. It's pretty freaking sweet

My boat is a '89 18' BassTracker, that picture was before I wet sanded/buffed/polished the metal flake finish and reupholsted the interior and painted the engine cover. It's 110hp so she scoots along pretty good. I plan on fishing quite a few tourney's on the Potomac this coming spring and summer. Anyone interested in fishing with me as a non boater let me know. Tourneys are usually every other saturday

What kind of antifreeze consumption are you talking about (forgive me I'm glanced at this on my droid)? May be leaking like mine does, will show you next sat. If knock is in upper end possibly wrist pin/ cracked skirt??? I would still lean towards dropping pan and checking oil pump screen, and visually checking each rod and piston. If head was cracked before no telling what the internals may look like... can check tranny while underneath.
If that checks out then onto the head...

 

burning definitely. No leaks anywhere - i scoured that engine bay. No evidence of it in the oil either.

I'm thinking cracked head (on bottom), and broken skirt on #3 (also has misfire code on same cylinder).

 

im kinda doing the same on my romy... not much now, but i put rails up front, accidently got a tapco folder (brings the suck... getting an ACE side folding stock next week, mod it to fold to the left). im also thinking about fabricating the bolt carrier with a galil style handle, that way, when its time to pull back after a fresh mag, my right hand doesnt need to leave the trigger.

Makes sense, the oil pressure at idle is a little on the low side though.
Did you happen to check the heater core???
If it ate a skirt looks like a bearing or 2 may need replacing.
This is jmo though

 

oil pressure is fine - spec is no less than 13psi at hot idle. 20 is where mine sits as well.

i assume heater core is fine, went for a ride along - no coolant smell at all, no wet floor, good heat.
