hey fellow jeepers. i have a 1991 jeep cherokee sport 2dr 4.0 that wont start. i just did the coil and it is still not getting spark. the distributor shakes rough when i crank the motor im starting to think the teeth on the bottom end of the shaft on the distributor is shot and i might just need a new distributor but i could be wrong and i rather diagnose the problem before replacing random parts any help or ideas would be great and will be thankful

Did it just quit running all at once? It was it after you replaced something. The dizzy is easy enough to pull and check the gear. One bolt and it doesn't index. Mark the rotor and dont crank engine with it out and install it just as it was if its ok.

With it getting no spark have you checked the ground wires at the oil dipstick tube? Its the source if alot of headaches.

I bought the jeep like this for 500. My buddy said his brother shut it off one day and wouldn't start after that and it sat for 3 months

Do you get fuel? No spark at all sounds like a issue with those ground wires on the dipstick tube, check them good, check for fuel at the rail. Also check if you are getting fuel into the cylinders, crank it and pull a plug and see if its wet. You also said the dizzy shakes, make sure its tight, I think its a 13 mm.

Check for power to the dizzy, then check the big group of wires held on by the dipstick tube stud right behind the dizzy for a broken wire. Also can remove cap and turn engine over, make sure the rotor spins while cranking. All fuses and relays good?

Sorry to pound on those wires. But they have screwed me over before. I had no spark and chased it for days and that was it. Ive also had a bad crank position sensor( on the drivers side of the bellhousing) cause a no spark.

OK so there is a factory plug coming from the wire harness near the computer box unplugged with no where to go. If u jump the wires it gives power to the coil and the fuel pump but still doesn't start. If u don't jump the wires the fuel pump doesn't turn on and the coil wont get power

Crankshaft position sensor. Unplug it, and plug it back in. Sometimes that does the trick.
