This info was copied from 01LimitedXJ. It should help in your search.

Explorer
Door Code
41..... Open 8.8".......... 3.27
42..... Open 8.8"..... ..... 4.10
43..... Open 8.8"..... ..... 3.08
44..... Open 8.8"..... ..... 3.73
45..... Open 8.8"..... ..... 3.55
46..... Open 8.8"..... ..... 3.73
D1..... L/S 8.8"..... ..... 3.27
D2..... L/S 8.8"..... ..... 4.10
D4..... L/S 8.8"..... ..... 3.73
D5..... L/S 8.8"..... ..... 3.73

also, the axle will have a tag on it telling what gears it has. or you can turn the yoke and see how many turns of the drive shaft it would take for the wheels to turn once.

For anyone interested at the local junkyard I found six 8.8s, 1 had 4.10s but it was open diff 3 had 3.73s with limited slip and 2 were 3.55 open diff all had disc brakes, I can get them for $125 an axle if anyone is interest ill pull more than 1 axle and sell them for a little over 125 and shipping or if you live within driving distance of Ocala ill give you directions to the j/y where thay are at!!!
