Illinois thread
No.
The available gear ratios from AMC were 3.07,3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56
You could specify any of those ratios when you ordered a Cherokee.
But.. a rule of thumb especially once Chrysler screwed things up, was that there were 'stock' ratios.
6-cyl, auto 3.55
6-cyl, manual 3.07
4-cyl, auto 4.10
4-cyl, manual 4.10
Some will say that the 4-cyl auto had 4.56 'stock'. But... that is a case where the cover needs to be removed and the teeth counted. Because both 4.10 and 4.56 were found. The 'odd' ratios tended to be found more in the AMC Jeeps, with 3.31 being the most rare. It was part of the fuel miser package during the AMC-era or on some California emissions Jeeps. 3.73 was found many times in the towing package on AMC era Jeeps. So finding an XJ Dana 44 the chance of finding a 3.73 is a little higher than just a random D35 axle.
That being said... anytime you deal with AMC, there is no such thing as 'stock'. AMC allowed you to order every single item on a Jeep.

I am from Byron Illinois (rockford area). I have lived all over Illinois though Aurora area/carbondale/peoria. Never had a jeep before. I was just looking for a winter 4x4. Seemed like I could do no wrong with the shape it was in for 900 bucks. We went 120 miles through the snow today. Pretty much 100% stock right now. 190k and running strong. Tuning her up this weekend.

Are you planning on doing any mods to it or just a winter driver?

^^^^i talked to this guy and it does sound like cracked head cuz he said he can smell coolant from the exhaust. i think im going to pass on that even tho i wanted a 2 doors xj badly.
im not a gc zj fan but for some reason im digging this '95 orvis edition. the interior color is cool looking. i saw few of these orvis edition at the jy couple time and always like it. the question is there any problem issues on the '95 model?

For right now it is going to be used for a winter driver. I could see possibly adding some things on down the road. Right now just primarily concerned with making sure everything is in tip top shape mechanically speaking.
I have seaformed the oil and will be changing it later today. Seaformed gas. Have new platinum champion plugs to install and a new air filter. Might spring on a newer battery today. Seems a bit slow to crank and with the temperatures dropping like they are now I would hate to get standed somewhere. I will be replacing the valve cover gasket probably this weekend as it is leaking.
Any other common things I should look into? I understand the heads on later models such as my 2000 se have a tendancy to crack (so I have read.)
