So if I get a 98 ZJ hatch, this should be a simple plug and play project?

They say 99 is the best year to buy. I think if you can find something that runs well, shifts well, with working 4x4, and very little rust you'll be ahead of the game.

It depends on a lot of factors. I'd check out Craigslist and used car lots for vehicles in your price range. I've been looking for another Cherokee to drive through the winter for a couple weeks now. Everything I looked at was either a rust bucket or ran like crap. I finally found a 2000 that needs a little work, but it wasn't rusty and the motor is strong. Don't jump at the first thing if it's not what you want or needs more work than you'd like to do. Make sure you check everything thoroughly. I always crawl under them and check the floors, suspension mounts, check for any leaks, and any obvious flaws. I wouldn't rule out other years, otherwise it'll take you forever to find one. Anything 4x4 will be pulling a premium since it's winter. Take your time and you'll be happy with what you purchase.
just install new muffler (cheap) and had the shop chopped off the cat converter. now not worry about some petty thief stealing the cat converter. wow it drives so much smoother!! there's a side of me wanting to put a small lift in it and be happy. the other side of me is to get the '93 and sell the '92. damn im confuse now what i want to do. i only want to own one xj.

I'll be on the lookout for a 98 hatch then. I think I'm going to just deal with the current rust, stop it from spreading, make it look nice on the outside. Then when I move down south early next year, start hunting.
i used the rust stop made by loctite. then use fiberglass to cover the hole and bondo it. there's a bunches of video on youtube show you how to fix rust. so where south part of state you moving to?

On the Grand tailgate, there were quite a few a Pick-n-Pull in Summit a few weeks back. You can check their inventory on line before going
