The issue with the AWD ZJ is that the early ones, like yours was equipped with the NP249 transfer case. The issue with that particular transfer case is that it has a viscous coupler inside of it that makes it operate in AWD mode. The problem is that this VC will eventually fail and lock your Jeep in AWD mode all the time. This makes your MPG go down and causes tires to wear out more quickly. A big issue with the VC, is that a replacement costs more than swapping a different transfer case into the Jeep. Can you drive with a failed VC? Absolutely, I did for a couple of years.
Now... on the early ZJs(like yours) you can't drop the front driveshaft to eliminate the bidding and horrible gas mileage. If you try to your Jeep will want to roll away when in park. The later ZJs do not have this problem.
A ZJ with either V-8, good gearing and working Trac-loc is a hoot to drive. Curb Kiddies mouths drop open when you do a big ole double candy cane burn out in a fat pig of a SUV.
