i think if the gearing is high enough you can install a spartan without removing the carrier, which would greatly reduce the time on install. with higher gears the pinion is bigger, so the ring gear sits closer to the carrier giving enough room to remove the crosspin while the carrier is installed... i think i can remember reading that somewhere. that's in a dana 30 though

A guy at work told me that same thing .. He said he installed his locker with out taking the carrier out but he had to grind down one corner of one tooth to make it slip inOriginally Posted by fathan16

Pull the carrier pop off the ring gear remove cross pin and spider gears, reassemble with locker installed. Simple and easy. I think doing it with the carrier in would make it a pain.

It's not possible in the D30. The center pin isn't held in with a bolt like the 8.25. You have to remove the carrier to tap out the pin holding the center pin in. If that makes sence lol

you can hammer it out with the carrier still in... but i think if i had to do it all again i'd still pull the carrier. the axles aren't hard to pullOriginally Posted by builtnotbought89'

Tis true! I have a special punch just for doing so, its about 12" long and lets you easily hit it and have plenty of room Originally Posted by fathan16

But I would still pull the diff as its a fast process.

Oh I stand corrected, but ya that sounds like a pita! Haha I had to remove the ring gear anyways cause of the 4.56s.
