Alright I need some help. I have a 91 4.0 4x4 manual cherokee and it will not start. The battery turns all electronics on but when I push the key to start all the happens is this horrible squealing noise it sounds like something is spinning but not the way it should. It sounds to be coming from the crankshaft area. I took the serpentine belt off and all the pulleys spin no problem so nothing it seized up. Any one had this happen or does anyone have any suggestions on what to check I have never heard a sound like this from a car.
Squealing I'd be looking at your throwout bearing more then anything, during start up it should squeal, release the clutch and see if it goes away.

Would have to listen to it to better tell what's squeling. Could just be the starter if your lucky.

I am retarded it turned out my starter was missing the bottom mounting bolt and a loose top bolt.
