I'm just looking into axles now, but it seems like a front HP44 and a rear 9" aren't a bad idea... A few on craigslist too for cheap. I'm not pulling the trigger, but are there specifics to look for, avoid, better axles to find altogether?

That's my swap. It's going to depend on if you want to go full width or not. You can find older cars with XJ width and bolt pattern but they'll be small bearing 28 spline, some cars had the bigger axle but it's hard to find. As for the 44 just make sure it doesn't have cast wedges since you can't cut em off. If you're going fulls then just find a truck with the set and be done with it, f-150s, f-100s, and broncos. Do a search for donor cars cause it'll help in going to JYs since a lot came with different measurements, etc. My welder was bought for this swap and be prepared to spend some cash. Not so much for the axles but for all the fab work, brackets, axle parts, etc. I'm sure somebody else has more knowledge about it but it's a fun swap.

Ben, the first question is, what is the tire size you want to run. "Realistically". If you'll be running 35s, might not be worth swapping axles and $. There are other things you can possibly do.

If you want to eventually run 38s, then yeah, new axles are definitely in order.

Lol that's the smart question! Big axles are a dedicated mod so you hit the nail on the head.

No, not yet (long arms)... What axles are they?.... I'm realizing instead of throwing little bits of money at the jeep here and there I should just plan.... I'm broke, very broke, college kid broke.... BTW, thanks to all of you guys paying taxes so uncle sam can loan me some cash to get an edumacation I paid and paid for a few years when I was welding full time so I got a taste of what was to come, just happy to be in school now... Making money when I can though means I need to approach the Jeep differently.... I'm gonna try to think realistic / big picture. I have patience and the drive to do it right, so I don't mind reading and reading till I have the money to make a move on some parts or something..... I've already been in touch with a local about some ideas / start up for the Jeep... I think I'll do unibody stiffeners (thinking Roc Dog, they go nose to tail and include steering box reinforcement... BUT... it's $250 for just the materials, dunno if it's worth it or what), get some sliders and s SYE. Then I can install my Tcase skid and wheel while I collect and wait.

So, yeah, very rudimentary idea is full widths, drive on the street for now, and run prolly 37s... ish..... Ideas ideas....

I have 3 or 4 people in mind who I'd like to consult on all this, brainstorm, bounce off ideas, NEW possibilities, etc... Maybe guinea pig my jeep.... Mostly wanting to make it reliable, NOT worry about breaking, and thinking move the front axle forward and the rear back....

So, please offer up ideas, input, if there's enough ideas floating around I'll make a thread dedicated to this.... Anyone wanting to help can PM me, and I'll be PMing a few people with questions and ****, going from there. Just after seeing Dustin's Jeep's combo, I did a quick craigslist search and it seems like you can find those pairings pretty cheap. I dunno.... Like I said, waiting to hear back for a job (bank account's fat with loan money, but it's all for school, bills, etc.) and then go from there.
