Don't do it. I did mine on the durango box and i've never been able to get it right again, and now it grinds turning left sometimes.

Hey everyone, new to this forum even though my join date says 2009, I recovered an old profile that I started and never used . Anyone know of any good wheeling clubs/groups in the denver area?? Looking to join one as not too many buddies of mine own 4x4 rigs.

Check the play in the box by rocking the steering wheel back and forth while watching the pitman arm. There should be a bit of play but not much. If there is a lot it should be adjusted. If there isn't much then tightening it will not help and it will destroy the box if you over tighten it. Ask google how to do it right, it's not magic, there is an adjuster for a reason.

The track bar, ball joints, tie rod ends, drag link adjuster, and control arm bushings also contribute to steering wheel play. Also a loose steering column can make the steering feel sloppy. My steering was horrible because my drag link adjuster clamps were on backwards and my track bar relocation bracket wiggled.

It needs a radiator an AC condenser a transmission cooler the front bumper a front grill the headlight a lower radiator crossmember support on upper front and cover a grill and since I know how to do all that work myself I made myself right around 1500 to 2000 lol

Most likely your issue is your track bar. Check the mounting location on the axle. After a while they tend to kind of oval out the hole allowing for play in the steering wheel and death wobble. I just fixed this issues a few weeks back on a TJ and it took care of everything. i would suggest looking at that. You can weld a washer on or cut metal to fit and make it stable again.

Definetly not the track bar or the mounts. Everything is tight as can be. This is no small amount of play on the wheel it's like 45 degrees

With two people it is very easy to watch and see where the actual play is. Just watch at each subsequent joint to see how far one side moves relative to the other. I thought my track bar was tight until I watched the whole axle move back and forth almost an inch. And I thought my ball joints were good until I watched them pop up and down. I thought my drag link adjuster was tight since the nuts were bottomed out until I watched the whole drag link flex at the adjuster every time my friend turned the wheel the other way.

Bottom line, tightening an already tight steering gear will destroy it, but if it is loose it should be tightened. If you want to stop by in Loveland sometime after xmas we can have a look and I'll tell you if your steering gear needs adjustment. If you want to check it completely on your own, lock the steering wheel, jack up the front so the wheels are off the ground, try to steer it by pushing and pulling one of the wheels, and see how far the pitman arm moves. If the pitman arm can turn even though the steering wheel can't, then your steering gear probably needs adjusting, unless there is something loose between the steering gear and the steering wheel, which is less likely but possible.

Cool. I will pull it inside Friday and jack it up and check it out. Reading lots of other posts, I think the gears just need a little adjustment. And I know not to take adjust too tight. I will leave a little bit of play to avoid blowing the gears

Did you clean it? Mine was hit and miss and I loosened it then realized I didn't have enough time to clean it that day, tightened it back up and apparently it did something because I haven't had a problem starting since.

Do not replace it. Cleaning it was easy as hell. Just take some sand paper to the little copper contacts and clean the grease **** outta the springs. Will be practically new.
And welcome to driving an xj
