BigCountry, I am so so sorry to hear about your Jeep getting jacked, bro. From what you're saying, it sounds like you just need to replace the ignition key lock tumbler in the steering column. The tumbler isn't too expensive to replace. It does involve a little surgery but, it's not too bad and I'd be more than happy to help you do it. The hardest part in my opinion is removing the steering wheel but, I have a puller that works great for that.
glad to hear you got your rig back dude, anything stolen or broken (other than ignition messed up)? If i were you, id take your rig to a shop and have them inspect everything to make sure the carjackers didnt break any vital things on the rig IE redline the engine and possibly blowing a gasket, or messing the brakes up, or whatever hidden problems there might be

Glad you got your Jeep back. How did you get it returned? My Caravan was stolen off the WalMart parking lot out in the county last year and the next day we found it abandoned just 8 blocks from my house.
How was the column broken? Arent they steel?

i'd replace the column. get one from a junkyard jeep. it's very easy to swap out. takes me less than an hour total. i've done a few tho. but it's very straight forward.
you should be able to get a replacement from the wreckers for under 100 bux. just make sure you get one with a key.
it doesn't matter if the column has cruise etc and yours doesn't. that's how mine is right now. everything still hooks up and works. except cruise, of course.

yeah brotha. Sorry to hear about the XJ. I've had 7 motorcycles stolen and my riced out Civic stolen. Got civic back but it never felt the same. It felt violated. Never got a single bike back though.
So I figured getting a jeep it would never get stolen. Who would want a jeep? I guess thieves don't care what they still. To do whatever it is that they do once they've stolen a car. I don't live that lifestyle, so I couldn't say.
The bigger, uglier, and more complex to drive I think would be a great deterrent for most thieves to think about jackin my xj.
Replacing the ignition is rather easy though. Take care
