need to figure out why my temp was slowly getting hot and i was only in 2wd no ac. everything is new for the cooling system. even sitting in traffic with the ac on it starts getting passed 210 then all of a sudden jumps to 260 and check gauges lamps pops on but doesn't smell hot or act funny. it is one of those things that bugs me.

Perhaps sticky thermostat. Bad radiator cap gasket.
Change them both. Theyre cheap.
Ive purchased many parts broken directly from autozone.
Wonder if its a gauge issue. Since its not smelling funny.
My thermostat got stuck open one day offroading, so the system eventually got too hot and burst a minor hole the return hose. Very lucky it was near the end of hose so I Cut it and tightened it. Refilled with water. Let sit for hour. Drove home after, and it was still stuck open, so the fluid didnt have a chance to cool. Was pegged at 250 degrees the entire 12 miles home for me.
Not cool.

Bad fan clutch. The clutches are thermal and engage and disengage based on heat and speed. They break down and cause slippage which causes slower fan speeds which cause over heating.
Also could be incorrect sensor/gauge combo. Possible that analog gauge cluster with the sensor for the C-H gauge could cause incorrect needle movement but that hasn't been tested. Though I don't know which cluster you got.

i have a 98 cherokee.
i have no coolant leaks either. thermostat is new as off 3 days ago. i had put in a 180 when i replaced the radiator. then i went with a 160 just to try out and see if it would help and its only jumped up to 260 once and that was last night around 11 sitting in a parking lot with the ac on low. it only happens when im sitting and not moving. as soon as im doing more then 5-10mph it jumps back down to 220-230

just a dumb question, do you have both fan shrouds installed and completely intact?
I test drove a 96 that looked amazing and ran amazing( fan shroud was broken on top) and the thing just overheated like thats what theyre supposed to do.
my red xj overheated slightly while sitting at lights, because there was no Mechanical Fan shroud and the electric fan was broke. Fixed the e-fan, and it mostly went away. Got a shroud for the other, totally went away. Not a single cooling prob after that. stayed below 215 degrees even while wheeling at 1mph in the direct sun. E fan kicks on, BOOm back down to 170to195 ish
I just ordered a shroud for my MJ, its missing.
just my 2cents.

Just left the junkyard on Lamb. Not much is left for XJs. Found a 97+ passenger mirror since mine fell off yesterday. Looking for a driver side so it matches now. Got some weather stripping for all 4 doors and a new hatch panel.

X3 ^
Rocky Gap is very fun. Challenging(even to a guy with a locker. ) because you cant just plow through it. Takes a bit of thinking in some spots. I reccomend going first in your group. Makes YOU pick the right line
