Well I'm planning on having the TC put together tonight with the 21 spline input shaft. Maybe even installed in the Jeep if the input shaft install goes smooth and quick. So I need that linkage soon.

I got the NP231 torn down last night. As you can see from the side by side pics, these two input shafts are identical in every way other than the input spline count. I have come to find that the innards of the NP231 and NP242 are all very similar. The built in differential in the NP242 is pretty much the only difference I can see. The older style mechanical speedo sensor will bolt right onto the NP231 in place of the newer style electronic one that was on it. I will also still have a 4WD dash light as the switch for that will bolt right onto the NP231 at the end of the shift rail in place of the plug that is there now. I also accidently broke one of the ears off of the pump for the NP231. The pump from the NP242 is identical so I will be putting that one into the NP231. The last pic is of the older 21 spline input shaft put together with the newer low range gear cluster all ready for installation.

Well, I finally got the transfer case rebuilt. It went together fine but I was a little slow remembering how to put it back together. Plus I took my time and scraped all gaskets and re-applied sealant and I had to put the oil pump out of the 242 in the 231 because I broke the other one. So, you can see the mess in the first pic that I left the other night. Then there is the pics of it all put back together to include one of the new 21 spline input shaft and one of the SYE, older style mechanical speedo sender and the light switch for the 4x4 dash light all installed.

Okay guys so success!! The transfer case is back in the Jeep. my success story was pretty short lived, though. As I was re-installing the cross member I discovered 3 of the 4 bolts would not torque to the OEM specification of 30 ft. lbs. Those garbage clip nut inside the frame rails were stripped. So I will be doing the "cut a hole in the side of the frame rail and insert my own nuts" trick. That is good though. It will all be quality grade 8 hardware when I am done. Just a small set back. It will be remedied tonight.

Buck, we had that happen on jose's jeep and buckets jeep. We drilled through the floor and used big fender washers, nuts and longer bolts. Way easier than cutting 4 holes in your unibody and compromising its strength.
I think we used 7/16 bolts and bit, 5 inches long? Just use the holes that are there as your pilot!

they come in through the floor to the front right of the passenger seat and front left of the drivers seat, not under the seat but a bit in front of them. U put the head of the bolt through the top with good thick fender washers. If u cut little slits in your carpet you will never even notice the bolts are there as the carpet folds back over it. Its best to have a 2nd person helping u, kind of a pain by yourself due to the carpet.
we used the existing holes, just drill through the old nuts and floorboard. You may hit a drain plug on one of the holes, we did so we had to buy a bigger washer but its help up great so far!
