Sure lots of mods people do are pointless. But lights are supposed to be functional or at least useful this does neither. Lighting up the woods is good when the area your lighting is in front of the vehicle, behind or under. The majority of the light will be wasted on the vehicle itself.
And two lights on the hood will not light the woods like a runway, however a light bar across the roof or on the front filled with lights will.

But have had plenty of light setups over the years including on the hood and agree well placed lights are key. If you think they look cool than do it, if you want functional for trail riding at night there are much better places to put em.

The problems i would see you having with the lights mounted to the engine hood. might make the hood hard to open. might restrict how far the hood opens. and glare issues off othe hood might hurt your night vission more than the actuall light hitting the road helps.
