So THAT'S why everyone is hammering on him lol

 

His front shocks thread has kept me extremely entertained for the first hour and a half of work today

 

Dude, I'm on page 3 and laughing my *** off. I'm sorry, OP, that you don't have access to electricity and apparently haven't worked in a shop before. I started out that way, but I had a sawzall-happy mentor to get me moving right along with repairs.

Thank you. If it's actually easier, I wouldn't know, as I based my steps on the other incomplete VC gasket write-ups I've seen online.
As any beginner can attest to, the quality of online Jeep write ups are relatively low quality (no pictures, tons of steps skipped over, etc)

Hopefully, this one sets the bar of what a good write-up looks like, what detail a beginner needs to see in a write up,
in order to build up the confidence to tackle a job he's never done.

It would be great for a new generation of write ups like this to replace the existing library which often contains no details or photos.

It takes a lot of time and effort to take the pics, make sure they're good, and that you have ones of all of the major steps, then write it up, etc. There is an entire generation of new wrenchers out there that want to learn and I think that this helps encourage them to learn more and help keep our toys / sport alive. It's a Beginner's write up and a pretty good one I think.

 

hey man you put a lot of time and effort into this write-up and it shows, you did an excellent job no doubt and I for one applaud you on an outstanding job...

however you have to understand 10hrs for even a beginner is WAY TO LONG, even with the write-up times...

I'm by far a mechanic but my first hand with a car was a '74 nova transmission and at 16yrs old took me WAY TO LONG, 6hrs.... as I didn't have the car high enough and had to reposition to get out tranny, replacement however was only 1 hr.... with a helper....

10hrs for a valve cover is crazy long and I recommend you edit your post before any "beginner" attempts this, because if they follow this step by step and absorb all that time they may never work on their jeep again and just drive the maintenance into the ground rendering yet another jeep to the junk yard!!!

I cant for the life of me understand why everyone on page 1 and 2 are being such dicks to this guy.

So what if hes bad with cars. He still did it himself instead of bringing it to some mechanic who, lets be honest, will most likely half *** the job anyway just to get it done in 15 minutes.

Personally I prefer taking the long route, disassemble everything around it, clean it up, replace what needs replacing and be confident everything is correct.

Being that hes a beginner, and based on his previous attempts at work I would have expected a few hour job for sure when you remember hes new to this so most likely going back and forth between the Jeep and the computer reading write ups while also trying to take pictures and write his own write up. Plus throw in time for food, bathroom breaks and the usual "where the hell did that tool go" stuff and boom you're at 10 hours.

Time to get off your high horses gents, not all of you are master mechanics so theres no reason everyone should be throwing **** at this guy like a bunch of wild monkeys at the zoo.


I say great job man, good write up and congrats on doing the work yourself. Keep up the good work and dont listen to these keyboard mechanics.

True I haven't. But imagine being a noob looking in at our forum and seeing everyone lay waste to this guy.

I know I wouldn't register. I'd read what I needed to and go back to Jeepforum, land of the "Holy crap you're lifted 3 inches with 31s? thats amazing"
