x2... I've offered non-smartass advice in the past on two occasions and got mysteriously rude and angry PMs. It's a nice writeup and all but what the guy lacks in critical thinking and problem solving he replaces with attitude and ego. Somehow it's everybody elses' fault that his NY Jeep is rusty and things are more difficult to remove than in GA and NM. Apparently it was my fault that his local parts store didn't have 3M double-sided body molding tape in stock or he had some prep-related issue with it.

If you make a decision like that based on a single thread you probably wouldn't like most forums anyway lol.

You have a valid point, however I trawlled this place for a couple of weeks after I trashed my Tercel, this place and very helpful threads in OEM Tech (and a few in Cherokee Chat where people were showing off some interior mods) are what lead me to purchase my XJ. About a month after I bought it I made an account. Membership here and buying my XJ was based on the wealth of good information and decent threads I saw. I looked at JeepForum and Pirate 4x4 and realized they're opposite ends of the spectrum. Kind of like Teletubbies and the Manson Family.

The majority of people joining here either won't notice (joined via the phone app typically lol), have been on the Internet a while and know that there are trolls and ignore it (seasoned forum users), get a specific recommendation (friends), or read technical posts for a while before making the decision to sign up (old guys).

This kind of **** happens. If you're concerned about forum image the best thing one can do, IMHO, is keep up the good helpful technical threads. Threads that actually have followups saying that a suggestion worked or show fixes are worth their weight in gold. Well, virtual gold, I guess. Definitely not BitCoins lol

So what if hes bad with cars. He still did it himself instead of bringing it to some mechanic who, lets be honest, will most likely half *** the job anyway just to get it done in 15 minutes.

Personally I prefer taking the long route, disassemble everything around it, clean it up, replace what needs replacing and be confident everything is correct.

Being that hes a beginner, and based on his previous attempts at work I would have expected a few hour job for sure when you remember hes new to this so most likely going back and forth between the Jeep and the computer reading write ups while also trying to take pictures and write his own write up. Plus throw in time for food, bathroom breaks and the usual "where the hell did that tool go" stuff and boom you're at 10 hours.

Time to get off your high horses gents, not all of you are master mechanics so theres no reason everyone should be throwing **** at this guy like a bunch of wild monkeys at the zoo.

I say great job man, good write up and congrats on doing the work yourself. Keep up the good work and dont listen to these keyboard mechanics.
Thanks Ottowa. I agree that the quality of the write-ups should speak for themselves. Part of my intent with such detail for such basic jobs is to set a higher standard for the level of detail and quality of existing Jeep write-up online. Thanks again for the encouragement! This stuff is not easy when all you've got is a driveway, basic tools, and an internet connection. I just ignore that fact that the Jeep online community is very hostile to beginners, particularly NAXJA.

It took me 10 hours b/c of the reasons you stated, in addition to a few others. Also, one of my bolts was cross threaded, and that killed a couple of hours trying it 2 dozen times, removing the whole thing, testing other bolts in the hole, locating a tap and die set, and trying, in vain, to retap that hole, calling a few mechanics and decided to use a few washers to get that bolt tight enough, and watching for leaks. I also ran into trouble letting my heater hose clamps over expand beyond the jaws of my hose clamp tool. I also really took my time degreasing all the surfaces and parts with a toothbrush. As a beginner, you lack the experience to know what is "good enough".

But, you are correct. If I did it again, it would probably take me 7 minutes, like most people on the internet claim. My rule of thumb for a beginner is to take all bragging time estimates and multiply by 5 for a realistic estimate!

Nah dude, you'll have to remove the engine and drop the tranny to do that.

I, too, would like to applaud the detailed write up. Some are right in the fact that a lot of people just ASSUME everyone knows what theyre doing and dont bother stating the "simple" and "obvious" steps in write ups. Granted, Ive been doing work on my jeeps since I was about 16, but there are times that I still would like to refer to a detailed write up for help. So, again, good job on that. Also right with the fact that there was way more work done than needed.. but I can see where some are coming from and wanting to make sure everything is cleaned up and comfortable knowing it was done right with time. Just my 2 cents.

I think the writeup looks good, and appreciate the details.

Would be nice if a mod would actually do his job, and remove all the bull***** posts in here, and make the thread clean...

It doesn't matter if he has other threads with lots of questions and been sending some bad PM's to some of you. This is a writeup, and should be clean from non-helpful posts...

Just my two cents.
