Default are you running hot 210 to the red, mine has always done this.

I have always had my engine temp at 210 and up, I replaced coolant and did this and that but one thing I never really thought about was how tight my drive belt was until I changed my power steering pump out.
After replacing I tightened my belt a little tighter that it was before now I am at about 180deg ?

No Kidding! Mine stays between 210 and 214. The only time I see it below 210 is when I first start it up or if it I don't have the engine running.

Something else had to have been at play here -- I don't think tightening up the drive belt a bit will reduce operating temps by 30* or more.

Perhaps he has an extremely well "burped" system. He coulda hung it by the trailer hitch from a crane while loosening the temp sender. Gotta keep an open mind.....

How long does it take for it to get to that temp? Maybe the thermostat isn't opening all the way?

not sure but it has been 210 and up since I bought it, But making the belt tighter or maybe the power steering pump had something to do with it.
It is pretty steady at 180. Who knows.

The late great Paul Harvey would know as in there has got to be "The Rest of the Story" coming into play.

I agree that you need to VERIFY your actual coolant temperature by pointing an infrared point and shoot thermometer directly at the thermostat housing. That will tell the true story. There can be inaccuracy between the coolant temp sensor (in stat housing) and the gauge in the dash.

The infrared thermometer is a great tool and they are quite inexpensive now. I use a Raytek MT6 ($56 on Amazon) and love it dearly. I use it not only for automotive troubleshooting but for many other things like air conditioning, finding electrical hotspots in the house, etc. Or any shop can quickly scan it for you if you like; they all have this tool.
