Default XJ won't start in park only neutral.

Hi all.
I have had a recent and increasing problem with my 1992 XJ not starting in park. I had to shift it into neutral to start it then shift it into park.
Recently however, it won't start in either park or neutral.
I have to turn the key, foot on brake and repeatedly shift into park, neutral, park, neutral. It eventually starts, usually in neutral.
What's up with this glitch in the shifter or whatever this is.
I have power to everything else.

Thanks.

Here is a link to an excellent article (good pics) on how to "refurbish" the neutral safety switch.

Good luck!

had the same problem, its either your cps or neutral switch, took mine to jeep dealer and was the cps which was around 350 bucks for everything,he suggested a new neutral switch,so i told him go ahead and do that also which ran it up to around 550 bucks, the parts are cheap, and if i could have found out what it was then,i would have done it myself and save some money, your at the right place to get it done yourself, good luck.

had the same problem on my '91. used the rebuild procedure and, lightly lubed it with di-electric grease. BUT, I took it one step further and gently scraped the contacts clean with a new sharp straight edge razor down to fresh shiny copper(also scraped the contacts clean in the wiper part and cleaned out the gunk in the spring as that can make them stick and not make good contact even after a cleaning leading someone to replace a good switch. works PERFECTLY now saved me $300. thanks to this forum!

Kinda funny, mine wouldn't start in park for about two days, then it never happened again...

I have a 92 XJ and it ran into the same problem after getting out of storage for the first time in 6 months. I replaced the neutral safety switch and everything is back to normal.

Neutral Safety Switch is failing, it can be rebuilt, the technology exists. No other way to return the reliabiltiy of the component. Go to Gojeep.com and follow the writeup. It works and then your switch won't let you down.

The above link was 13 years ago.

A simple search would have shown:
