Xj transfer case rattle

Xj transfer case rattle
I started to hear a rattle while idling or hitting bumps. I found through some research that it was the transfer case linkage. So I bought the rebuild kit but that is where it ends. I have read various sources and some say to drop the transfer case while others say to pull the carpet up. What would you recommend. This is my DD so I want to finish it ASAP.
