Got my Xj in April of this year.
About two weeks ago I started my xj before work and the blower wouldn’t work but I was still getting some heat. Later that day it kicked back in and has been running until today when it turned off again. Even if it turns back on I want to get to the bottom of the real reason that it turned off in the first place.
When dead, at every speed setting? Look under pass side dash all the way to firewall almost...blower motor resistor. Connections might be corroded or burnt. Blower motor itself might be old. Its in engine compartment center of passenger half way down. Control switch usually not issue
Engine: 4.3L with headers and full 3" exhaust system
The real reason is most likely a bad connection at the fan switch. It passes a lot of amperage regardless of the motor speed and the plug that connects to it can get heated and worn and can give the symptoms you are getting. Another place is the same issue where the plug goes into the motor ballast resistor located under the glove box on the HVAC housing

ok, just changed the resistor itself and it didn’t work so I’ll move on to trying the switches. Thanks
I thinking the next step here is to get a blower motor itself put in. Any tips? Looks like there is a lot if stuff in the way of getting the blower itself out.
try supplying the motor with 12V direct from the battery with wires capable of at least 30A as close to the motor as you can which should rule out bad wires, switches etc etc
You need to check the service manual to get the blower out, cant recall...but i do know you will be pissed if you replace it and its downstream
I byapssed mine with 3 relays...that spurred on another dude he went further and did all 4 speeds, its on this forum somewhere ...fan relay bypass or something like that my nic will be on it
Ended up getting frustrated and didn’t want to risk messing up the ac system putting in a new blower motor especially not knowing that’s what it was. Ended up taking it to a friend who is a mechanic and he did track it down to be the blower motor and the connector to the blower motor that were bad. Appreciate all the help!
