Default XJ fires up then dies immediately.

My 96 XJ with the AX-15 will occasionally fire up then die immediately. After a few times keying it over, it will take and drive like nothing is wrong. What gives? I find also that if I gas it when keying it over, will usually always stay running. This has been happening for a few months (although it has been getting worse) so it shouldn't be bad gas.

What are possible causes?

I need all the help I can get.

Two things that come to mind include a "marginal" battery, and a faulty throttle position sensor.

1. Load test the battery. Any parts store will do this for you for free.

2. Test your throttle position sensor

3. And as a matter of course, be sure all tuneup hardware is fresh (plugs, wires, cap, rotor)
