hey everyone, i've been gone for a while. workin 2 jobs and keepin busy. so i might be able to get some doors locally for my 96 xj, i know some body parts changed on the newer style. rear lenses, and stuff. are the doors off a 98 gonna fit my 96?

the doors themselves will fit but the hinges changed. just swap out the hinges and it will work just fine

 

yup and also make sure when you get the doors you get the door slammer also. i believe the 97+ have a different slammer than the 96. i know i had to change the slammer on my 89 when i put 97 doors on.

 

thanks, by slammer do you mean what i call the striker, the part the latch hits to close?

 

yes grab the striker, i forgot about that

 

Striker bolt location changed.
At least from the earlier 95 models.
Check with a tape measure the hieght of the striker bolt in the doorjam and compare.
If there is a difference it will be something like 3/4"

 

cool! this is good info!, for when i can get better doors, newer ones without the vent windows and hopefully no rust.

 

There is a write-up in the latest JP Magazine about fitting newer doors in older Cherokees (Pre-96)

I do not know if it is online, but I have the mag here somewhere under all my research and drawings.

 

so if the striker is in a different location, how hard is it to bolt into the body? are there holes already there, or do you have to drill new holes?

 

Im not exactly clear on what they did, as they put newer Cherokee doors on an older Commanche.
I'll dig up the article and re-read it in the morning.

 

please do post the details if possible, I have a lead on rust free 99 doors.

they didn't address what you do with the hinges from 98 and up hinges going on older jeeps, i assume they mean you just bolt on the new hinge, but it was vague. and they didn't give any detail on moving the striker, they just said they drill holes, did they just drill and tap, or what do they do to bolt the striker on, no pics or info. anyone know?
