I came up with a shopping list with superbright leds. I also ordered a pulse width modulator that I'm going to attempt to control with the stock dimmer. We'll see.

I'm ordering 3 different types of bulbs for my interior: 74s, 194s, and 561s. I'm getting different color temps, 'bulb' size, and light output for different areas. I won't get into the specifics of why I chose each bulb unless I do an in depth write-up.

I think I've made sense of the madness. Correct me if I'm off.

How do you replace the 194 bulb for the 4x4 shifter? Do I have to take out the whole center console to replace that one?

 

Just pop off the plastic cover. Small flat head screwdriver makes it easy.

 

This might seem like an extremely stupid question but... I'm looking at the PC74 replacement LED bulbs on http://superbrightleds.com/ which look like they just plug right into the plastic holder that turns into the back of your cluster. I've been playing around with some extras I have and I can't figure out how to remove the original incandescent bulb. It seems like it's permanently fixed in the plastic mount instead of being a friction fit like a lot of the other bulbs on the Jeep. What am I missing or do the replacement LED lights come in their own plastic mounts? Thanks.

 

The LED's I bought did not come with plastic mounts. All you gotta do is pull the factory bulbs straight out and insert the led bulbs/wedges.

 

That looks great!! What model # is that from SBL? I did the Cool White also, on my interior domes.

If you're afraid of busting the plastic (it's cheap) try soaking it in warm water or you favorite very light solvent, then try again, maybe try pliers.

Well I got around to installing them last night. Taking my dash of was somewhat of a B**** but I made it out alive.

The bulbs I used are on the last page if anybody is interested.

 

Well, this was the result of my lubricating it and trying to yank it out with pliers. I was being extremely careful but it suddenly shattered and then I had to apply a LOT of force gripping the wires to yank it out the rest of the way. Now, are the five main lights in the cluster that are colored different and easier to pull out? I don't want to risk damaging one if that's not the case but it has a darker holder than this. Almost all of the direct replacement incandescent bulbs seem to come with the plastic holder. I wouldn't mind destroying the bulbs in these holders if I can definitely put the LEDs right into them.

 

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to add this: Just for future reference, there IS a difference between the light grey and dark brown plastic holders. I found an extra brown one and the bulb popped right out. It appears to be the exact same type as the grey holder but removable. Why they did this, I'm not sure.

Also, does this mean that everyone has been replacing their grey holder PC74 bulbs with LEDs that come in the holder already and buying LED only replacements for the brown holders?

 

You only have to replace the 5 brown ones. Don't do anything with the gray ones.

I tried reading through and finding this and came up empty.

I'm trying to find a footwell bulb for my 96 xj.

I see somewhere it is a T-10 bulb but it looks wider then a T-10 (I have tried to use a T-10 in the socket but to no avail) there isnt a bulb in there currently, so I have nothing to compare it to or get a reference number from. I suppose I can just use led strips like I did on the interior (I just wired them into the dome light socket) but would perfer to use an actual bulb is possible.

1156 on the left, 97+ should use them. 96 should use 194 wedge type bulbs on the right. The socket in the middle is from a 95 or 86 (same) and 96 were also the same if I remember correctly.

T10 and 194 are the same bulb more or less, although the t10 designation sometimes refers to combined bulb with twist socket. A light strip might be good. The 194 bulbs shown aren't super bright, but my here are good ones out there. Cree type led bulbs are almost always good. Also, don't get anything long, as it will increase the likely hood that the bulb gets caught on a boot of someone getting out of the jeep

 

this is what im working with on mine. (I would assume its a footwell socket since there it no other type of socket down there with or without a bulb in it. the blue bulb is a t-10 bulb the same as what I installed in behind the dash. There looks like a small clip on the backside of the socket, which I would assume would hold the bulb in place.

 

Disregard my bad advise and follow Racerx's guidance. The light plug looks like the I posted in the photo before.
