i have 1990 jeep cherokee laredo with the 4.0 liter i6, about a week ago i was wheelin when smoke started to poor out of the hood. when i popped the hood i found it was from transmission fluid spraying from an unknown location onto the fan and belt where it was being thrown everywhere and burning up in the engine. I looked all around and all i could find that was leaking anything was my thermostat housing, i replaced that with a brand new one and i still have transmission fluid leaking everywhere and for the life of me cant figure out where from. If anyone has an idea as to where i should start looking for leaks it would be greatly appreciated.

I had a leak similar to that in the soft part of the traany cooler line where it crosses over the top of the steering gear box in my 91.

okay guys, I'm brand new and I will explain this to the best of my abilities...
I have an 89 cherokee loredo, when you look at the rear view mirror, and look directly above it, attached to the head liner is a little box, what in the world is that. All I have in there is a black box with a circuit board and some transistors, what is that supposed to be, because I would like to replace it, but have absolutely no idea what that is, thanks in advance.
NEEEXXXXTTT, well right next to the cluster there is an on board computer, nothing lights up, so I probably need to replace it as well, I haven't had time to get in there and examine it further, but can that piece be taken out and replaced easily or is that attached to the whole dash/cluster?
Thanks a bunch guys, any help with be appreciated.

I'm trying for the life of me to figure out what you are describing. Can you take a picture?

ok, i have a question, i have a 99 xj with a 4" lift and 31" street tires. my parents gave it to me for my first car and i am going to upgrade. but it is my daily driver and i drive it a lot. the one thing is that it very noisy. you cant hear the person in the passenger seat when you hit 70mph, and the steering wheel shakes, the body feels very flimsy, and it pulls to the left a lot. i was wondering if this was normal or does my lift need an upgrade ( all of the bushings are pretty much done) thanks

I don't know what years they added the spy camera .... er power door lock sensor could it be wiring for that? Or maybe wiring for where the console thing would go?

Here's why I say this(from personal experience). At first you will take the doors off and carry them everwhere in the back till you get sick of having no cargo space. Then you start leaving them at home. And no matter how closely you watch the weather it will eventually get rained in. Thus no carpets and the drain plugs. The dash and stuff have never gotten wet in mine and its been POURED(like puddles in the floor afterwards) in on more than one occasion. The seats will dry out in an hour or so in the sun so you don't have to worry about them.
PM me about a write up, but making a pre-97 XJ doorless is stupid simple and easy. Took me under an hour if I remember correctly and they still shut like the day I bought it. My doors haven't been on in a month or something like that.
Forgot to prime it. Someone else said there isn't a need to prime it.I saw something about vasoline, but not sure how that works. There is a bunch of sludge, was considering the Seafoam thing, since its so popular. So i guess I gotta pull it apart again. Blast! Don't have any shade or a garage. Oh well.

Quick question- I know a zj gas tank skid will fit a 97+ xj fairly easily, but how about a pre 97? I just picked one up at my local jy for $cheap and I wanted to find out how do-able it was before I started messing with it too much. It looks like it will fit perfect, except for the actual bolt holes lining up, but I need to pull off my hitch to check. Any advice is appreciated

I wqas about to switch to an electrical setup but was advised to go with a Zj clutch but wonder why.

How much is too much?
I have three XJs: A daily driver, my old daily driver with issues, and a parts rig that's pretty much intact except for the body (yeah, drives and everything, but the top is chopped off and no interior). I also have about 4 other vehicles and a couple tractors around.
The plan was to put the engine from the chopped one in the old daily driver and have it as a back up rig for my wife and I. Then I started off roading and found that it didn't need an engine swap, but just a simple idle control valve. Cool! Wheeled it a few times and fell in love with it again, and started cutting the fenders, dropped the sway bar, and started looking for cheap tires....
Found some 35s for 300, but before I bought them I changed the valve cover gasket to chase down an oil leak, and added a coolant additive a friend gave me to try out, then went one last time as a stock rig to meet up with my cousin and thrash it a little.
It didn't pan out, and as I was trying to work on my CB to find him I noticed quite a bit of coolant on my bumper... and found the endcap was leaking. Not only that, but the oil leak I thought I'd fixed wasn't, and now it appears that about a quart per hundred highway miles is leaking out of the head gasket onto the exhaust, which I'm afraid of catching fire...
Anyway, it's a '93 with 240k on it, the 4.0L. Nothing's wrong with the frame, no creaks or anything other than I put a dent in the cross member, and I still can switch everything back to stock (bumper, fenders, swaybar).
I have the engine from the parts jeep, a Renix, but that doesn't really matter, that I can put in it, or I can just fix the head gasket for about $30, but I'll have to buy a new radiator. I've not invested anything into lifts, lockers, tires, or much else other than the parts vehicle and some oil.
The problem is that what little time I have before winter I need for moving, settling in at the new place (animals, fences), fixing up and selling the old place, life stuff, so I wouldn't be able to work on the engine swap until winter, and probibly not much else until then either, if nothing else comes up in the meantime. I also have a truck that I need to get rid of or fix, which will take up time as well. I just flat out don't have time for a while, and don't know if fixing up the ol' beater will even happen.
So, (sorry fo the long story), it seems my choices are: Wait for the time to fix the thing up, and spend another load of money making a good wheeling rig... and not get back on the trail until sometime next year if I'm lucky, or dump the two XJs and the truck and buy a CJ5 that's all set up with lockers, tires, a winch, radio, and everything else the XJ doesn't have for about $3k, not a bit of work needed, and I can be on the trail within the next month, if I'm lucky!
My question is, Should I keep the first jeep I've ever owned and love to drive, not knowing that even after working on it it still could have problems, or get out of XJs and into an unfamiliar rig that doesn't need any work?

As far as the electric goes, here's a site I found helpful. Make sure to search around the whole site for other cooling mods and fan selections. They have CFM ratings, what they tried, what worked, what didn't, why, and other great info. I really like the Tarus conversion and finally found a fan myself, though it may be a while before I get to do that...
http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoElectricFan.htm
One thing to keep in mind, the Cherokee has a long narrow fan, which is good for two smaller fans side by side, while the grand has one big one on a squarish radiator, so if you swap between them it seems to me that you're going to have more issues with shroud than the fan, and if you don't set things up right you'll get no "extra" out of the larger fan, as it'll swing passed the top or bottom of the radiator.
Of course, later years may be set up different in the grand, I'm speaking from early-mid '90s on both the V8 grand and the XJ.

Blend door stuck?
Hey guys,
I have a 94 XJ which seems to be stuck on the setting for defrost and floor vents because those are the only vents that air come out of. I have searched for vacuum leaks but could only find one hose with an elbow not connected to anything. The area that it is in is on the passenger side routed in front of the battery, close to the lower part of the radiator. I took out the radio to look at the climate control unit but could'nt see anything wrong. The vacuum things wth the levers all seem to be holding (I could move them but they would move back). But when trying to change the mode to other settings, nothing happens. Any suggestions? All feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

'98 XJ manual trans reverse engagement
Question here. I have a 1998 XJ with 4.0, manual trans and command trac. It has low mileage and I'm having intermittant problems getting it to go into reverse.
I used the search function and looked at the first 200 posts to show for "reverse" and found no answer.
Sometimes it goes into reverse just fine, other times it won't go until I hold in the clutch and work it through all the gears, letting the clutch out a little for each gear to reposition the gear teeth. The shifter doesn't have slop and it works fine when it works.
Any ideas?
