Thank you so much for clearing that up. I much appreciate it. I'm assuming that a 8.25 pumpkin is the same whether it originally came with a limited slip or open dif. Is that right? I was thinking about doing the dif myself. I would probably want to help somebody do theirs first so I would have some experience.

 

Has anyone swap a newer style radiator in an 86 or older model? If not does anyone know what is would take? I have a 4.3L v6 in my jeep now and want more space in front of the motor to hopefully put a mechanical fan back on my motor and have my electric fan as a back up. If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction that would be great.

 

So I go back to my parked XJ and notice "Where's the dang tailpipe?"

Turns out the tailpipe fell off somewhere along the way. I'm surprised, the exhaust isn't that old, there was not even any rust visible on the end of the tailpipe. No holes in the muffler, the pipe just broke right off the end of it.

Anyhow one thing I really hate dealing with is exhaust work so that's one of the few things I'll go to a shop for. Went to my usual exhaust place, they checked it and sure enough as expected they say muffler and tailpipe. So they work up the estimate and its over $500!! WTF?? This looks like about the simplest possible exhaust system you can have that includes a catalyst. (A few years ago the same shop did a complete cat-back on my daily driver for less money!)

So what's the deal here, are XJ mufflers packing gold coins inside? Or am I just out of touch and that's what a simple muffler and tailpipe job goes for these days? (Needless to say I'm going to get a second opinion...)

 

Amazon, thrush 2.5 in 2.5 out, and Walker tailpipe. ~$70. Go to nearest place you can get some clamps and extensions, maybe a hanger to replace the back one. Less than an hour in the garage, you'll have a cat back for less than $100. Might rust through in 3-5 years but then redo it again or paint it with high temp paint.

Edit: for them to build you one should be more like $200-300

 

I got quotes of $700+ to put dual pipes on my J10, and it's almost all a straight run with nothing in the way.

A muffler is between $40 and $150, depending on what you want.

 

what you didn't realize is that they added an ******* fee cause they had to deal with you.

 

That's what I was expecting and it would be worth it to me not to have to deal with it. But not for over $500! I'll have to crawl under there and see if it looks like I can get the muffler off without too much trouble. What I hate about exhaust work is having to deal with all the rusted crappy fasteners. I don't have a welder so it's gotta be a simple bolt-off/bolt-on job. (On those occasions that I do hang my own exhaust I use stainless fasteners.)

 

i have a noisy leaf spring bushing. I think I can get away with drilling the old one out, but since I plan on only unbolting the end with the failing bushing, I'm looking for the bet way to press the new one in. will a ball joint press I can rent at the auto parts store work? first time I'm attempting this so I'd hate to be stranded because I can't press a new bushing in!

Is the driver window glass the same for a power window and a manual window on a 1993 Cherokee? I pulled glass from a power window, but don't want to tear my door apart to find out they're different. Thanks!

 

Planning on pulling a 231 case. Planning on doing a bench rebuild/SYE install on the donor. Any tips on making the removal easier? Never done one.

 

Took a closer look at my exhaust today, it looks like about the last foot of the tailpipe broke off right at the rearmost hanger. The rest of the exhaust system looks solid. Seems to me I should be able to do something with this. It sure as shootin' doesn't seem like it should be a $500+ repair. (There was a time when if I brought something like this into a shop they'd just install a tailpipe extension for a few bucks.)

 

So I have a 98 XJ sport 4x4 4.0 automatic with a 3" zone lift and 32" tires. I have a 19 bayliner that I use as my mobile glass blowing art studio. My plan is to travel semi long distances around the country pulling this trailer. I have been driving around Florida, I've done 2 round trip runs from south to north. On one of those trips I had lots of overheating issues. I don't know the weight it was then but I have changed things around and just had it weight finally. It weighs 3,490lbs with a tounge weight at about 5-600. So 3,500 is basically my towing need. Is there anyway I don't have to sell the jeep for a pickup? What can I do to improve its capacity? Back to stock tire/wheel size?

 

Regear the axles to probably 4.56 (if you plan on keeping the 32" tires) if u do a lot of towing. Add auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. Heavier ZJ fan clutch. That's what I would do.

 

Using a transmission jack will make it easier and more safe. Case weighs around 80 pounds, if dropping it by hand place a piece of plywood on chest to protect ribs and act as a table to set it on. Before removal, clean case of oil/grime to assure a secure handhold. The most difficult part was getting it off my chest and onto ground.
