if you followed it and it leads to a toggle switch, check to see what other wires are connected to the toggle and then follow that wire. if thats the only wire connected to the toggle then that switch isnt connected to anything, if that so put it to good use and wire it up to something you wanna have a switch for lol
i did a similar thing in my jeep, i re wired all my interior lights to a toggle switch, its pretty convenient

OK so I checked it to see whether it had hot or ground when the switch is turned on and the reverse lights come on!!! so I put the gear shift in reverse and the reverse lights do not come on... so my question is does anyone know what the proper fix for this would be or is is just better to leave as is????

oh wow..im guessing the PO didnt know the right way of fixing things. well from the pics i can tell they cut the wire from that connector. try connecting it back to the same wire on the connector and see if the lights will work properly

Reconnect the cut wires.
Pull and clean the NSS. Been lots of threads on how-to.

I would second cleaning the NSS. Let us know if that fixes it. If they hotwired the reverse lights, then the NSS isn't working properly, or they bypassed it all together. I would also check the rest of the wires going to the NSS too to see if they put a jumper in somewhere for starting the engine.

Will the engine only start in park and neutral, or will it also start in gear? That will at least tell you if the switch is still doing its "normal" job (and if it's actually hooked up).
