Default Won't stay running

I have a 96 jeep cherokee 4.0 HO something keeps pulling the battery down. Now the jeep will run as long as I keep the gas peddle pressed down, as soon as I let off the gas it shuts off. Start it back up and does the same thing. I'm thinking its the fuel pump our maybe the filter? Idk

how many rpms are we talking to keep it running? changeing out the filter would be a great start. the pump usually either works or it doesn't, no grey area there.

Mine did that before. Was recommended to me to replace the battery and that worked.

if you have a voltometer check to see how many volts your getting to the battery while the engine is off & running. also double check your battery to ground.

Stalling is one of the most common symptoms of a marginal/bad battery. The engine management system hates it when available battery voltage is low.

Almost assuredly, your problem was resolved when you installed the new battery.

Mine just started this same problem tonight. But slightly different symptons.

My voltmeter on the cluster has been pegged past 19 volts since the day i bought it but never had a problem with starting and running til tonight. Also, the previous owner put an Interstate deep cycle marine battery on it.

Will start off a jump and i have to pump the pedal and then hold it at about 1500 once its running or it shuts off.

should i try a different battery or possibly a different problem?

Post year and engine....Resolve your charging system issue! If you truly are charging at 19 volts, it's going to fry your battery in short order. Which sounds like what might have happened. Get a meter. Put one lead on each of the posts of the battery using DC Voltage range. You should be in the 13.5 to 14.0 volt range with a healthy charging system. Once you have a solid charging system, then get that battery LOAD TESTED as it is most likely shot.

its a 1997 with the 4.0.

I think the battery is already shot.

What else should i look at besides the alternator? Thats the only thing i can think of that would cause the over volting issue.

The voltage regulator is located inside of the computer on your 97.
