wont start when in park

Default wont start when in park

hello my mother is driving a 95 xj I6 for the winter on and off it will not start it park but will in neutral and then it will go back to starting in park any ideas of what it could be??

Absolutely.

The problem is the "neutral safety switch"

This is a VERY common problem on the 4.0 You can often "refurbish" them and return them to full function. Here is a link to a good article on this. Try it.

Agreed, NSS sounds like the culprit. Try cleaning it first before you shell out for a new one.

nss has recently been replaced but im gonna clean it and make sure everything is correct hopefully that will solve the problem thanks everyone

My '93 does this at least twice a day... try this until you fix the NSS:

Place foot on brake pedal... push and hold...
Shift to nuetral...
Turn key to start engine...
Place in park or drive, whichever you need once the engine cranks.

My '98 4.0 has been doing this for a few years now. The messed up part is that when it started doing this I took it to a mechanic and after two trips an alternator and a starter still no luck. It took the tow truck driver on the third trip to properly diagnose the problem. He got it to the shop I jumped in, put it in N started right up and I drove off!!
