Try starting in neutral. Could be the NSS. Check your battery cables and ground cables as well.

hear a click?---> starter? Turn the key and hold it... jiggle the shifter.... check your wire harness....

Tap starter really hard with a hammer, try to start...

this sounds really familiar. I'm having a similar problem with my '96 cherokee sport. battery power is fine, but nothing happens when i turn the key. had to replace a fuel sensor of some kind about a year ago when this happens but of course when i took it to the mechanic, she started fine and they couldn't figure out what the problem was. any suggestions other than those listed above?

You might start here;

If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

Also having the battery terminals/cables shiny clean lead is always a plus.

No, not really the same. I mentioned the terminals, posted a link, and mentioned park and neutral. Granted, in the ballpark though.
