this sounds really familiar. I'm having a similar problem with my '96 cherokee sport. battery power is fine, but nothing happens when i turn the key. had to replace a fuel sensor of some kind about a year ago when this happens but of course when i took it to the mechanic, she started fine and they couldn't figure out what the problem was. any suggestions other than those listed above?

You might start here;
If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/
Also having the battery terminals/cables shiny clean lead is always a plus.
